Ever been riding your bike and changed gear, and the derailer has gone clickety-click or even come off?
Well, here is a simple way to minimisze this effect.

It may be obvious etc, but it does help.

Items Required

A Bike
Toothbrush
Rag
Oil
A Screwdriver
[Optional] An Air Horn

Unfortunately, I do not have an air horn to show you, so if you really don’t know, Google it.

Items Not Required

Nappies
A Golf Club
Cheese

Method

Get your bike, and flip it upside down like this:

Now, try and remove the back wheel, the entire thing, not just the tyre.If you have an air horn, blow it now.

Should be something like this:

Sorry about the slightly blurry pic, but I’m sure you get the idea.

Now, clean the entire works on the tyre with your toothbrush. Any old oil you remove here, be sure to replace at the end.

Now wipe the rest of the crap off with the rag, and if you have disc brakes, wipe any crap off those now, with a clean bit of rag.

Now, put a few drops of oil into this bit, and blow the air horn two times:

Head back to your bike, and clean off this bit:

Now, painstakingly clean every single sprocket in the chain. While doing this, I suggest you listen to the Poke’mon theme tune, as it will make you work faster.

Now pop the wheel back on, making sure your tyres are pumped up. As you put it on, it doesn’t matter what gear the chain goes on, as it will straighten itself up when you change gear.

Now you are done, and your bike should look nice and shiny at the back. Time for one last blast on the air horn.

Try riding it now, and your gears should be a lot smoother!

yes, my brakes are crappy. I follow the idea of: "If you can’t make your brakes work better, make your horn louder." Hence the airhorn.

Wow an egg about cleaning the gears on a bike. This is so much common sense, it should not exist outside of instruction manuals for idiots. Oh and it involves constantly blowing an air-horn to make yourself deaf, which obviously is "cool" otherwise he/she/it/dog would not put it in the egg. Right?...?...?

or you could put WD40 on it anyway still pretty good lol 3 *s

Funsize

No, because WD40 is a wet lube, which attracts dust, so you are just making the problem worse.

Dec 10, 2006 11:47 am - NICE!!!!!!!!
NICE!!

Good detail and use of Pics.

I was a Bicycle Mechanic for 10 years in my youth, and I’ve seen first hand that it’s amazing just how cleaning the crud out of there and re-adjusting things will improve performance.

Be sure to check the Chain for stretching too, it will also effect how positive and smooth the derailleur will shift, especially under the load of you pedaling heavily.

Peace
Viper
