first of all the remote desktop connection comes with most windows xp these days...

a router is the device that takes your internet connection in and splits it to several other computers. The problem with that is when u want to connect from a computer outside of your internet connection you have to specify to the router which computer to send that outside connection to.
setting up a router is kind of hard if your new at it. okay im going to use my router as an example in this tutorial and we will be using the windows remote dekstop connection.

step 1 - setting up the router

okay to setup the router we need to get inside the setting of it. look up your router brand name mine is linksys we are going to need the default password for your router. (unless you already know it) For mine, linksys, its a blank username and admin as password. Okay go to start->run and type cmd or if your at school command.com :}
in the command prompt type ipconfig/all we are looking for our default gateway and ip address.

okay my default gate is 192.168.1.1 and my ip address is 192.168.1.100 open up your internet explorer and in the address bar erase ur homepage and type your default gateway this is where your gonna need your default router password unless someone has changed it.

type in your password, you should end up here.

were not gonna go into dyndns stuff now for all u critical know-it-alls out there... okay if you look at my router, it has a applications and gaming section on it. look for a similar tab on your router. we are trying to find port forwarding.

this is the port forwarding on my router if its not like this it should be similar. okay now we need to add a service to allow the remote desktop connection from outside in and tell it what computer to go to. you need to add a service like i did, called rdp, or whatever the .exe is for the windows remote desktop rdp worked for me. and remote desktop connection use port 3389 for default.so you can setup in the roter that all ports from anoutside connection program called rdp can use any port from 1 to 65535 (all ports) to send it to (YOUR IP ADDRESS WE FOUND EARLIER) mine was 100 so i type 100 in the blank and click save. so i just told my router if it recieves any outsides connections from a program called rdp from any port ( you only need 3389 to 3389) to send it to my pc :) click save the router has just been set up.

Step 2 - Setting up remote desktop connection

In order for remote desktop to work you have to have a password on your user account or it wont let anyone in. so go to control panel users and add a password to your user account if you dont got one already.

now we need to make sure we have our remote desktop connection enabled by going to the system properties (right click my computer) and go to properties then remote. make sure allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box is checked. click ok.

open up your internet explorer browser, now we need to find your ip address so we know how to connect to your router from an outside connection. after your browser is open. there are a lot of places to check your ip address you can go to whatismyip.com and your ip will be in big blue letters. so ull get 4 sets of numbers. xx.xxx.xx.xx these numbers are very important. open up remote desktop connection by going to start->programs->accessories ->remote desktop connection and type in or copy, paste your ip address in the blank. it will ask for a username and password.
enter the username and password for your pc that you are connecting to. the one we made the password for earlier. and you did it. if you want to send files from that remote computer click options and i think its under local resources and click share disk drives. After that remotely connect to the computer and your current local drive will be in my computer.

rate well
peace

I would highly recommend *not* doing this, because of the huge security risk. Instead, install a ssh/telnet server on the computer, and connect that way.

the username for the remote desktop connection would be the computer’s username you are trying to connect to. and you must have a password for that user.
