I know there’s a million eggs on a stun gun from a disposable camera... But read on. This one shows you how to launch the charge.
Skip the first section if you’re tired of the disassembly process.
Materials:
1 Kodak ’Fun Saver’ or similar disposable camera with flash
2 to 4 feet of 1/2" pvc pipe
2 wires (about 6", whatever gauge you have on hand)
2 insulated alligator clips (MUST be insulated!)
1 small piece of plastic wrap
1 roll of electrical tape
1 soldering iron
1 roll of solder
Disassembly of camera:
(If you’re familiar with the Fun Saver and the safety issues, skip to the next section)
1- Use up the film. It can be processed as normal once you remove it from the camera.
2- Peel away the stickers (some come in a cardboard sleeve, remove it).
3- Pry the back of the case open CAREFULLY. There may be up to 330v still in there.
4- Remove the battery. TAKE NOTE of the polarity (which way it goes in)! Use the position of the flashbulb for reference. On mine, positive was away from the flashbulb. Yours may be different.
5- Pull the roll of film out and bring to the one hour photo lab.
6- Pry the front off, exposing the circuit board. BE CAREFUL not to touch anything metal!
7- Find the capacitor. Looks like a battery, but with two wires coming out from one end. Short these two wires with a piece of metal (like a screwdriver). Be ready for a loud POP. Short it multiple times.
Now it’s safe.
8- Rip off the lens and trigger mechanism. You don’t need it.
9- Mark the circuit board for polarity of the battery and the capacitor. The cap should already have markings on it, but youre going to remove it... and forget which way it goes. Mark the board.
Your board should now look like this:
Making the shocking dart / charger:
1- Remove the capacitor and straighten the leads. You can sharpen them if you want...
2- Tape the shiny end (That’s usually connected internally to the positive lead, btw.).
3- Roll a piece of plastic wrap on the back. This acts as a stabilizing tail.
4- Cut off the excess plastic. You only need about 3/4 inch.
5- Use electrical tape to fasten the plastic and build up the diameter to fit the 1/2" pipe (Not too tight..).
6- Solder the alligator clips to the wires, then to the connections on the circuit board where the capacitor was. If you don’t have red and black clips, put a little tape flag on one so you know + and -.
Note-
Would be a good idea to put the circuit board back in the camera case, for obvious reasons. Cut notches in the case for the wires.
That completes assembly.
To Charge:
1- Connect the alligator clips to the proper leads on the capacitor. Make sure the clips aren’t touching.
2- Install the battery. (observe polarity!)
3- Push the little silver button on the front of the board. You should now hear a high pitched whine (charging).
4- Wait for the small light to start flashing rapidly.
I got mine up to 284 volts in 7 seconds! :-)
5- Carefully remove the battery. Then the clips. Dont touch the capacitor leads. It’ll hurt. A lot.
To load:
Put the capacitor in the pipe, points first.
To fire:
Breathe in through your nose (VERY important! A cap in your mouth’d knock you on your @ss!), aim, and blow out HARD.
Another idea for firing is to make a small potato gun with a half inch barrel... Better range and more power, but get more than one cap, because it probably won’t survive the impact.... :-)
Also, (I haven’t tried this yet, but it should work) Fill an empty cigarette pack with aluminum foil and some gunpowder... Shoot it, and it should go up...
