Hey everyone today I’m going to show you how to draw a half decent glowing head in flash, if you don’t already have flash you can download it for free below (serial included). http://www.filefactory.com/dlf/f/4b360d/b/6/h/500489f956d69a23

Ok first of all open up a new flash document, you should now be looking at something like this……..

Now select the oval tool and set the fill colour to the green gradient and the line tool to none and draw your self a big fat oval in the middle of the canvas, it should look something like this…….

Next select the gradient transform tool and click your oval, now some lines and junk should come up, experiment with these until you get your oval looking all 3-D ish (a bit like this)…….

With the select tool select your oval/ball thing and press F8 this will open the convert to symbol page, now make sure that movie clip is selected and type head base or what ever you want this piece to be called and press ok.
You have now converted it into a symbol so if you delete it by accident all you have to do is open the library by going to window > library (or pressing Ctrl+L), and then drag the symbol back onto your canvas.

Now we will make the eyes for our head, again choose the oval tool and make the fill colour black then draw an oval off to one side of the head (not on the head), and press F8 again now type eye as the name and click ok.
Now that we have the base for the eyes we need to draw a pupil, at this time you may want to change the background colour to blue or something like that so that you can see the pupil which will be a small white oval off to the side of the “eye”, once the “pupil” is drawn press F8 and call it pupil.
Now it is time to combine the “pupil” and the “eye” to make a whole eye to do this select the pupil and press the directional keys to move it into the right position over the black part of the eye, now with the select tool drag a box over the 2 symbols to select them both, and once again press F8 this time call it whole eye.

You may be thinking hmmmm there is only 1 eye most people I’ve met have had 2 eyes so copy the whole eye and paste it in place by pressing Ctrl+Shift+V, move this second eye to the right of the first using the directional keys, now to make it a bit more comical go to modify> transform> flip horizontal and then resize the right eye to be a bit smaller than the other but keep it the same shape by holding shift as you resize it.
Drag select both eyes and convert them to a symbol called eyes, then move them into position on the head something like this……………….

Next we come to the mouth, for the mouth draw a small, slim black rectangle and turn it into a symbol called mouth and place it on the head under the eyes.
I know it doesn’t look much like a mouth right now but it will when we are finished with it.
Double click the mouth to get inside the “mouth” symbol now with the select tool equipped hold the mouse close to the corner or sides of the rectangle, notice how a little line appears near the bottom of your cursor (varies depending on if it is a corner or a side), this allows you to manipulate that side or corner of the shape, also if you press and hold Ctrl while dragging an edge it will create a corner there, so click and drag the corners and edges until it looks like this (you may have to zoom in to make it easier)…….

Now we need teeth and a tongue, so for the teeth double click anywhere outside of the mouth and draw a small white rectangle and convert it into a symbol called teeth, then move “teeth” into the mouth area.
Double click your way inside the teeth symbol and manoeuvre them into this position…….

To finish the teeth draw several black lines to show the divisions between the individual teeth.
Finally before we get to the glow we have to add a tongue, to do so just draw a red circle/oval to one side then with the select tool hold Ctrl and drag the top left bit in towards the centre, now turn it into a symbol called, yep you guessed it, tongue and put it in place.

You should now be looking at something like this……..

Now we come to making our head glow, personally I think a blue glow looks pretty good on a dark background, draw a circle/oval of any colour you choose straight over the top of the completed head, don’t worry because the “glow” isn’t a symbol (yet) it will go straight to the back of every thing else.
Now turn the glow into a symbol called glow, at this point it will jump to the front but this can be fixed by going to modify> arrange> send to back.
Because a glow is usually transparent we will have to adjust the alpha settings, to do this, click on the “glow” and click the pull down tab found here……….

Then select the alpha option and set it to something like 25%.
Now you can either leave your head like this or you can read on…
To make the glow pulsate go to the time line (bar thing at the top with the numbered rectangles in it) and click “scene 1” to make sure you are not inside any symbols, then right click in frame 4 (the rectangle that is 4 boxes along) and click insert keyframe then click the frame with the dot that has just appeared and click on your glow then go back to the alpha setting and change it to 30%, now insert a keyframe in frame 8 then right click n the new frame with a dot and click remove frames.

Now finally you are done, to test your glowing head press Ctrl+Enter.

My finished product can be viewed below…
