okay, i was bored, so with my amazing box of computer parts, i devised this, because it was too hot (seriously).
what i used:
a spare usb cable (standard printer usb, so it has the posisitve and negative power connections)
old cpu fan (from an intel 700mhz cpu, from 1994)
a heatsink (i could use it to make usb cooling for my monitor or something).
what i did.
got my cpu, and cut of the plug on the end, stripped back the red (positive) and black (negative) wires, and i cut down the white wire (data, for fan speed in this fan).
heres the sort of usb i used (printer one usually, but this was for a usb modem :P)
cut the object end of the usb (not the end you plug into your pc)
trimmed back the insulating
peeled back and cut off the siver wires and silver foil.
pulled back the green and white wires (data) and trimmed the red and black wires.
connected the red to red, and black to black.
plugged the bizotch in. (this is safe, standard pc fans are 12v, so are the usb’s on my pc)
the fan in action, connected to a heatsink, so its usb powered cooling.
the heatsink removed, desktop fan, etc (remember, its a cpu fan, the back of it is what blows at you, cos it blows downwards towards the heatsink normally)
on my messy desk, blowing cold air in the direction of my chair (its pretty good actually, better than those cheap shitty fans)
also, it connects to a ps2 and works, but they have higher powered usb’s, so the fan spins faster.
note
im working on this, seeing as that fan has controlable speed, there must be a way i can use the white data wires, to control the fan via my pc (on/off etc). any ideas, message me.

 | Jan 12, 2007 3:49 pm - good job u get a 5* couse my house has like 500 fans inside of it(computer fans couse my bro. fixes computers and keeps shity ones) |

 | Jan 12, 2007 3:51 pm - nicely explained and good simple design 5* |

 | Jan 12, 2007 3:53 pm - Nice, 4*.
Would it be possible to use a speed controller from say..... a rc plane or something to moderate the speed of the motor in the fan???? |

 | Jan 12, 2007 3:54 pm - haha cool |

 | Jan 12, 2007 3:54 pm - @thedrowner, no, different voltage, and different hardware, it wouldnt work. unless i bought transformers, but im not spending money on mods :D |

 | Jan 12, 2007 3:57 pm - Thechamp has downsyndrome. |

 | J n 12, 2007 4:17 pm - nice,but if i wanan cool down i just stand under the air conditioner. 5* |

 | Jan 12, 2007 4:22 pm - lulz, noob ants voting it down and not posting why :P. fags |

 | Jan 12, 2007 4:33 pm - Bsmovies, sorry i was under the inpression it would work by moderating the flow of electricity to the fan, woops. never mind, good egg. |

 | Jan 12, 2007 4:35 pm - Great egg man! Keep ’em comin’!!!
5* |

 | Jan 12, 2007 4:35 pm - great egg i’m glad to see good quality eggs still slowly, but steadily coming into RE. 5* |

 | Jan 12, 2007 7:02 pm - Sweet man 5* |

 | Jan 13, 2007 1:54 am - can you not change fan speed in the bios? |

 | Jan 13, 2007 2:20 am - This looks pretty cool. |

 | Jan 13, 2007 3:12 am - Jook, some BIOS SOMETIMES, will, but most of the time you need software.
Bsmovies, USB is 5v, not 12v on a PC, but on the PS2 it’s 12v. Unless you changed it to 12v. Any way, I’ve done this, and it’s sweet. 5*, great egg! |

 | Jan 13, 2007 3:54 am - Hey BS was looking round dse ( dick smith electronics) for a sutible speed controler, i was thinking if the motor is dc, you could use a speed controler like This to moderate the speed. But the amps have to be lower than 1amp to be sure you can control it, just a suggestion. |

 | Jan 13, 2007 3:59 am - Plus im getting this fan for what youve done.
This fan for the project. |

 | Jan 13, 2007 4:30 am - nice! 5* and favorite |

 | Jan 13, 2007 8:28 am - Would love to see more eggs like this, too the point, but tell you exactly what needs to be done. Original 5* |

 | Jan 13, 2007 10:04 am - Cool... I never thought of this... About 2 days ago I put an N64 controller into my usb. |

 | Jan 13, 2007 12:02 pm - 5* cuz i needed somthing to do with some old shit computer parts. |

 | Jan 13, 2007 1:31 pm - 5* 4 u great egg. |

 | Jan 13, 2007 9:34 pm - Mine goes slow but I think I could fix it. You get a fiver. |

 | Jan 15, 2007 2:31 pm - Ehhh a lot of fans are 12v and usb runs off of 5v. You’d be better off using a molex connector and using 12v from your PSU to get full voltage. Also, if you want to use a pot to control the speed, you’ll probably want to run it through a transistor because those fans are like 2+W and most pots can’t handle that and you’ll burn it out. Nice egg though... shows people that you can run things off USB. You can make some pretty nifty things run off your computer. |

 | Jan 15, 2007 11:17 pm - 0 stars u fucing noob |

 | Jan 16, 2007 2:10 pm - thanks eric, that was clever. 0* on everything of yours , from a level 10 :P |

 | Jan 17, 2007 11:17 pm - I could use this, i have 3 old useless pc’s |

 | Jan 17, 2007 11:17 pm - I could use this, i have 3 old useless pc’s, 5* |

 | Jan 27, 2007 9:15 am - cool thats pretty sic but it would help to vaccum the dust out of ur ps2 that is probly why its runnin hot in the 1st place. |

 | Jan 31, 2007 6:18 pm - to make just a regular fan, you could take the fan and do tha same procedure as above, but only connect it to a 12v wall transformer you find layin around. be really careful though or you shock the shit out of yur self. the side with tha white stripe on the cord is positive |

 | Feb 08, 2007 12:39 pm - sweet 5* im gona make one even though it aint even hot here in england =( |

 | Mar 17, 2007 10:49 am - nice i love all your egg’s dude 5* and i know this is old egg but still kool |
