Alright, I haven’t made an egg in a pretty long time, so here it goes.
This tutorial is made for those who enjoy computer graphics (3d modeling). This will cover how to create the basics of a simple building. The second part of this egg I will make when I have more time, but its pretty much how to texture your newly created building and where to put lights to get maximum detail. Alright, so here we go!
What you need for this tutorial:
Time
3DSmax 9 or 8 (I will be using 9)- Easiest way is to use a torrent to get it, I will provide links:
the torrented version:
http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/885226/Autodesk_3ds_Max_9_0_cracked_h33t_PC_DVD_IMAGE
Or you can download the trial at the site, and register it with a keygen:
trial site: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5972446
Keygen with instructions (sorry had to use rapidshare): http://rapidshare.com/files/16499873/keygens.rar.html
If the instructions are unclear with the keygen just comment it or message me.
Lets begin:
1) Open up 3ds max, (we are going to do this without a bitmap),now click the perspective box and click that little button down there that says maximum viewport toggle: so we can work with only the perspective for now:
now select the shapes little tab:
Then select line.
2) (I am going to make the pictures big now so it is easier to see it) Now click T, it should go to the top viewport. Scroll down until you can see a decent amount of boxes on the grid. Now left click in the corner of that dark grey line, and follow as in my picture (hold shift when going up, down, left, or right so that its perfectly straight, if you get some jagged edges its alright):
3) Now make two more boxes inside, they should resemble this or else the building of the doors will be funny:
4) Now we have to attach them, so here is how we are going to do it. Right click on the grid, select move, now click the outer square ( the first square built), after you click it, go to the modifier tab:
Scroll down until you see the button attach, click it, now select the two boxes inside. After that right click on the grid then left click on the grid. It should look something like this:
5) Here comes the fun part :} Select the box, go to that modify tab again, from that dropdown list select Extrude, the parameters for the extrude modifier should come up, set the strength to 100 by typing it in, hit enter. Click P on your keyboard, scroll down on your mouse so you can get a fair view of the house, it should now look like this:
6) Not done yet! :D Select the house, and use the arc rotate tool (mine is yellow, doesn’t matter if yours is grey) to rotate it around so it looks at this angle:
Now whence your done with that, right click, then left click the house, right click the house and select convert to poly:
7) Now click the edge tool and select one of the edges after that click ring (what this does is selects all the edges around):
While keep everything selected, click the connect button (in the edit edges category look in the list)
8) Now for some windows! Now rotate a little, click the edge in the middle and hold ctrl then select the top edge, click the little box next to connect:
when that window comes up, put the connect to two segments, click ok.
Now two lines should be there, scale them to your liking, how? :
Scale them by clicking that green stick labeled Y. After that select the polygon face tool, which is located next to edge, its the red box not cube. Click in the middle of the two newly connected lines you made, It should be a red square, now click the Extrude tool and extrude by left clicking (the square) and holding, moving the mouse up or down:
Then go all around and repeat, but don’t do it for the side where we are going to put the door, that would be the side that we first rotated to, the side that shows in the picture on step 6.
9) Alright, almost done, now on the side without windows, select all three edges using the edge tool, then click connect, then with those two edges scale them down, move them over to where we are going to make the door, then scale down again to fit the door, its okay if its not perfect, we will perfect it :) :
Now choose the polygon face tool again (the red box, not red cube), select in between the lines and delete them: You are going to have to delete them twice (meaning that the inside needs to be deleted) easily it should look like this:
10) Now we have to patch up those nasty sides, so first off angle your house to look like this, (yours still has a semi-roof, don’t worry about mine, I had to delete it for the purpose of this tutorial, when you angled like this, I want you to right click that maximize viewport button (used in step 1) choose wireframe under rendering level and click okay, now choose that polygon face tool (red box, NOT CUBE), click create so far it should look like this:
Now I want you to click one of the vertices, and click the other 3 vertices, then click the one you started again to create the polygon, it should finally look like this (I didn’t quite explain this well, I will go in more detail if necessary):
now do that for the one on the floor and the opposite side, so your result should be this:
Then right click on the grid and left click to deselect it, then deselect the polygon face tool (red box, not cube), right click the maximize viewport again, put back to smooth + highlights, then click okay. Angle it and is should look like this:
11) Now select the border tool, (on the right of the edge tool) and click one of the edges atop of the house, now click cap (it should be in the edit borders section) you should get this:
Now deselect the outline tool.
Save it as a .max file, (default extension) So we can use it later in next egg.
Congrats, you just finished a basic 3d building! :D
Next Egg = How to render it into Jpeg, how to add lighting to it, and how to add realistic textures to it, also making an office building.
If you encounter any problems, feel free to message me or comment. |

 | Feb 16, 2007 4:58 pm - In case you are wondering what you can use this for: 3d models can be used in various game engines like unreal level editor, you can put this house in it and make a crazy map with the house, so thats what these things are useful for, I mean I plan to go deeper in detail with each egg. |

 | Feb 16, 2007 7:03 pm - 5*’s and favs
I love 3DS MAX! |

 | Feb 16, 2007 11:10 pm - pretty good *4 |

Quote: You mean you can use these with certain level editors?
You can save it out as certain formats, so when you upload it to the unreal editor, then you can walk around in the house and stuff, trust me, this gets fucking fun, don’t worry, I will explain it all ^.^ |
