Ok, so I just recently learned a nice way to get music from a few quite popular sites with just a tad bit of effort involved. I’ll go ahead and say that yes you can always just refer to limewire or similar, but wheres the fun in that?
First, HERE is the site where I learned this from, but I’d like to give a few tips of my own with this.
First, you’re going to need firefox, you SHOULD already have it. The extention that we’re going to use is firebug. Until I read how useful it can be I thought it would never be helpful to me, but none the less, its a great tool.
Go ahead and get it HERE
Decide where your song you are getting is, the two sites I’ve found that this works great with is Myspace and Radioblogclub.
Myspace
Radioblogclub
If you’ve never used either one to find music, it’s all too simple, with myspace just click music, then do a search on either the artist or song. With Radioblogclub it’s even easier, just search the song or artist in the search box at the main page.
Now, once you have the song you want, your going to need to open the firebug console on firefox, firebug will automatically set the console open button in the bottom right corner of the browser, it’s the green circle with a check mark. Once the console is open there will be a row of tabs that give you options of how to view whats on the site. You’ll want to select the option that says "Net". Im not 100% sure what it does, but using common sense Im going to bet it shows all the media that is coming to that location.
In the tutorial that I linked at the top of the egg, it suggests that you take out just the player console, but usually unless the page has tons of things playing at once, you shouldnt need to. Just bring up the "Net" option and take a look at how it lays out everything. You should see that there will be the file name, then location and file size. Look at the file sizes of things, most will be small because they are images or similar, but what we are looking for is mp3 files, usually about 2-5 mb. By now you are probably figuring out what we are doing, but there’s a trick to it still, apparently there is a limit at which time you can access the file, but that should not be too much of a problem. Scroll to the very bottom of the Net list, it lists the files in the order they are needed, which means when you are going to select a song to play with the player, it will access the file when you click on it.
Now, get to where you have the music player controls in the top half of the browser and the firebug console in the bottom half. Click on the song you want, and as it begins playing you will notice that a new file will show up at the bottom of the Net list, it will be a fairly larger file than the rest (this is what we want)
Right click on the file, and tell it to open the link in a new tab. What happens is, you will be directed to that specific mp3 file in which you can save and do whatever you please to do with it.
With my browser, it opens the mp3 with an embedded quicktime player in which I just go to file, save as and save the mp3.
Remember though, there is an expiration time on the file so be quick about it.
Now with radioblogclub, this one is a little different, but still the same idea. Find the song you want, play it and look for the larger file in the Net console, but this time it wont be an mp3 file, instead it will be a ".rbs" file. This is the file that radioblog uses, but from what I’ve read from other sites is that it’s supposedly the same as an mp3. Do the same with the .rbs file as with the myspace mp3 and right click, open in new tab. It will bring up a window asking you to save the file, click save and put it wherever you keep your music. The only thing you have to do now is go to .rbs file and change the extention to .mp3
*Depending how your windows is setup will determine if file extentions are shown on your files, if they aren’t HERE is a place that shows you how to do it.
Once you have the file extentions showing, just go to the file, highlight the ".rbs" part of the file name and type in ".mp3". You should be suprised to see that you now have a working mp3 file of the song now.
___________________________________________
The only real downside to this is that mp3’s from myspace like this are at 96kbs, which isn’t technically BAD quality, but not as good as it could be. We have to remember though, before downloading it we had nothing so 96kbs doesn’t sound too bad now does it?
I rarely ever HAVE to use this method to get music, because the best way I feel is just audio searching from either dogpile or yahoo. But if I can’t get my music like that, then I will try either one of these ways, and if they fail as well, then and only then will I be forced to use either bittorrent or limewire.
Good luck. |
