After being around many employers and having my dad as an employer, i have picked up alot of helpful little hints in and tricks through trial and error as well as just listening to people. I got my first job when i was 14, stayed loyal to that job and was able to go from making $7/hour up to $20/hour in two and one half years just by displaying that i need the money and that i do what it takes to satisfy my boss.
This egg wont require any steps or pics or any super fine definition, it will just tell you what you need to know.
-For a part time job doing anything from bussing tables, waiting on customers, cleaning the floor, moving cars, answering phones, scaping the land, or working on cars; there is no need to try to impress your boss with a huge lengthy resume of you high school academic achievements and how you solved the rubiks cube in 9.416 seconds.
My explanation for this is that the boss will not be impressed. You need to show that you want that job, you would be proud to work there, you want to work there and nowhere else, and that you went through alot of effort to get there. Do not call up the place and ask them if they are hiring. The boss will be more willing to find an opening if you walk in there and meet him in person. Do not ask one of the other employees if they are hiring because they may answer no because they could see you as competition. Just ask to speak with the owner or manager.
Search for a job around the end of the winter and around the end of the summer. Outdoor companies will be searching for jobs right after the snow starts to die down and your chances of finding a job will be higher because many of their employees dissappear over the course of 1 winter. Your employer would also have more respect for you if you tell him that this is your first job and you called them up first.
I was trying to find a job at an automotive service shop as a shop hand or shop maintenance technician.
When i got my job, I walked in on the last day of summer vacation and asked to meet with the employer. i met him and asked him if they were hiring. I tried not to be nervous and i was sure to crack small jokes with him. His shop hand was just heading off to college the day before i walked in and he said that he would be glad to have me work there after school on weekdays. He asked me if i had a car and i told him no and i told him that i rode my bike to there. I worked at there for 1 week and he noticed that i was doing a great job with helping people and that i had a great understanding for cars. He also noticed that i went through alot of effort to ride my bike acrossed town every weekday just to make $50 a week and that during vacations, i rode there at 6:30 in the morning and arrived exhausted but still continued on. After a week he gave me a raise up to $7.50. For my job interview, i showed up in a t-shirt and purposely tried not to show off.
Bosses have seen it all and they know that people who try to show off arent any better than jobseekers who just be themselves and are honest. A boss or manager with a sense of humor will have a strong appreciation for honesty. Even if the honesty hurts. After 3 weeks my boss asked me what have been choosing to spend my money on. I told him that i enjoy buying bmx bike parts and spending my money on having fun. It didnt bother him, i did the work that he wanted done and i didnt complain.
You always need to understand what you are worth. Do not degrade yourself and go around searching for low paying jobs flipping burgers for $4/hour after taxes and social security is taken out of your paycheck. Do not go around searching for jobs as a bus driver when you dont have your license never mind a CDL. If you believe that you can satisfy your boss and that you are ambitious enough to tackle anything he throws at you than start by searching for a $9/hour job. Certain jobs are easier to advance in than others. A job at an automotive shop is easy to advance in. You can start at there making $7/hour but easily prove that you are worth more and show your boss that you save/make him money and that he should have a large value on you. Once you catch on and prove to him that you plan to stick around and that your work is consistent, ask for a raise every 6 months. Theres no harm in asking so long as you dont demand it and so long as you dont do it every week. Be sure that you build up to the time that you ask for a raise. If you ruin a project or come in late 3 times in one week than asking him for a raise on that friday isnt such a great idea. Show him that you tackle and succeed at any project he throws at you and that you are willing to push the limits and test yourself. If he asks you to use a circular saw and cut up some wood than dont act like a pussy and say no, just say "get out the circular saw and a pair of goggles and show me how to use it and ill do it". If you are willing to learn and you have the responsibility to care about safety than you will earn alot of respect.
If there is someone at your job who does the same thing as you, you need to show that you can keep up with them. Yes it is a competetive world but you need to prove that you can spend the time to do things correctly, but still do it quickly and be sure that you dont leave a 20 minute "vacation" in between your tasks as a personal reward. Tackle all of your projects as a group and you will not rest or take a break until you are done for that day. Honesty will always pay off. If you are standing around with nothing to do and acting like you are doing something, than tell your boss that you have nothing to do. Or if you cant find him and he approaches you and asks you what you are doing, just tell him that you are standing around doing nothing and trying to play it off like you are doing work. Most bosses with a sense of humor will laugh, pat you on the back and say "that a boy!". No joke.
The main thing is just that every day, kids are getting fired from jobs at the grocery store where they put cans of campbells soup up on the shelves. Getting a job can be easy. Keeping it isnt a matter of what there is available, its about what you are capable of and how the work you can do expands with the inflation of competition in the workforce.
Apr 12, 2007 5:43 pm - Yeah thats pretty good advice, 4 of my last jobs i didn’t even need a interview or even a resume i just went and talked to the owner and he hired me right there. because i wanted the job and was willing to work.
Apr 12, 2007 5:52 pm - Pretty nice. Also good to mention, be eager. If you hand in your resume, and two weeks later they haven’t gotten back to you, call them to see if they’ve made a decision yet. I was hired just because of that phone call.
Apr 12, 2007 6:08 pm - another thing that people do wrong is staying there. If you dont have patience at all than a job is not meant for you under any circumstances. A job is a job unless your Bill gates. You are not going to go there and do nothing for 4 hours and cash out to make 30 bucks. If you dont like being there than quit, if you like your job than stay and if you are inbetween than make the best of it and change things so its a better environment for you and others so long as you dont distract others or make your boss upset.
Apr 12, 2007 6:12 pm - i knew that my boss liked me because he gave me a raise without me asking and he went out of his way to find more work for me to do so i could find more hours and make more money. He invited me to work on his boat and he requested that i help him with antique car restoration projects. He wont do this to somebody who doesnt like their job.
Apr 12, 2007 7:28 pm - "If i were to ask you if you would vote my egg a five, than would the answer to the question be the same as the answer to the question i am asking you right now?"
Apr 13, 2007 7:24 am - another great thing to have under your belt is if you were in the boy scouts, and have your eagle scout rank
ive talked to alot of people and they tell that they’ll put the resume aside and really look over them beacuse they can trust them even more then the rest
