I know there are a lot of eggs with powders, firecrackers and all, but this is a way to obtain ready made "flash powder" with a little ease. If you live in an area where fireworks are legal or you can obtain them, this egg is for you. If you cannot obtain "flashlight firecrackers", sorry-talk to your elected officials.
Whenever I purchase fireworks for the holidays, they always throw in a brick of firecrackers, the type that contains 1/16th of a gram of Flash Powder, the legal limit in the USA. After awhile, these seem small & boring and there is a use for these to obtain free flash powder, already mixed and easy to get.
REMEMBER: This is for educational and instructive purposes and no one should attempt to build a large firecracker with this information.
OK, enough of that happy horseshit....
Here are the tools you need
Black Cat firecrackers (easiest to use) a small handsaw, a vial to hold the powder and some magazine paper. The glossy pages do not allow the powder to stick. I have tried other brands of firecrackers, but these are the easiest to obtain the powder from.
After laying out a few pages to collect the garbage and waste, take one piece, crease it lengthwise and put to the side. This is for your powder. Now, take a cracker and CAREFULLY saw it lengthwise until you have gone through several rolls of paper.
After you have a good cut, start unrolling the paper.
You may find that a little more sawing is needed if you didn’t cut deep enough.
When you get near to the center, you will find 3 components: A red "filler", flash powder in the center and the fuse surrounded by "clay"
Remove the clay and fuse and CAREFULLY bend the other end to let the red filler roll out. You may need to use a finger to push some of it out. All you want left is the flash powder, as pure as you can get it.
You should end up with just the flash powder inside of the paper, appx. 1/16th of a gram’s worth. Move this over the creased page and pour it out onto the paper carefully. Tapping it will help get it all.
Repeat this for the other 16 firecrackers in one pack and carefully collect the powder in the crease so that you can transfer it to a pill bottle, vial or whatever you use for a container.
Here’s the mess you’ll make so be sure it’s an area that’s easy to clean up and free of flame.
One pack of firecrackers yields about a gram of flash powder, which if made into a homemade device, produces an awesome explosion-or so I am told...
I do not have instructions here for making the casings for firecrackers since this is an educational egg on how to obtain the flash powder from a small source. There are many eggs and books on how to roll your own or using cardboard tubes and end caps, create your own.
Use common sense if you intend to try this and I hope it enlightens your world of pyrotechniques a little more!!!
