About a year ago, my father and I took a trip to Death Valley and- being avid (yet amature) explorers, hiked out to explore the Keane Wonder Gold Mine, and never have I experienced anything like it. Once the hike was finished we bent back a gate that was closing off the mine about 50 feet in (and therin lies the illegality) and continued back into the winding complex, full of mine cars and tracks, and of coarse, multiple forks in the road. Not being prepared to find such a massive complex, we turned around after just getting 300 yards or so deep and because my father is getting into his upper 40’s, he did’nt want to make the hike again. I want to go back around March or April (before it gets too hot in Death Valley) with one (or maybe even a couple) partners as this mine IS VERY DANGEROUS and to go alone is only asking for a fool’s demise. As Iv’e said- I’ve been in my fair share of mining complex’s and this one ranks the top both in Danger (the whole damn mine continually looks as if it were due to collapse yesturday) and beauty (being a gold mine, all the walls of the mine are comprised of quartz and mica- so it all glitters) as well as intrigue (i guess only because they mined GOLD from it, and because i was forced to turn around last time) anyways- if you are interested in putting together a trip with me- (we would most likely just camp there in Death Valley) post a reply and i’ll do my best to contact you reguarding the details of dates and such. I look forward to hear from anyone in the CA or NA area with positive comments. (I myself live in Southern CA)
