Ok in this egg i will explain to the best of my ability how to successfully record a song whilst having practically no recording equipment.
First:
These are the amps we are using. This pic is outdated though. The little grey peavey is gone and now we have a 120W crate. but the fender is a 100W bass amp.
But of course you will need a mic. And it doesnt matter what type of mic as long as it is not a condenser. Thoses dont work well with what we are doing. But make that the mic can go into the mic jack on your computer. If not, go to radioshack and pick up the proper converter for like $4.
Audacity is a free, easy, and effective recording software. You can get it in either stable form or beta. I use stable because the beta version has some flaws.
After you download it, get your mic set up and make sure the dynamics are ok.
Then:
Set up the mic in front of everything but not too close to the drumset. And always have the amps facing the mic. But you should adjust accordingly to make it sound good. If the toms on the drums are too overpowering.....
....then buy rings for them. They are very cheap. But since we dont have any money at all, and our toms are weird sizes, we used electric tape. The main reason we used it was because it doesnt leave a residue when you take it off. And it works good.
But mostly the whole dynamics process is trial and error. Just keep playing then checking to see how good it sounds and make adjustments how you want. You can even make seperate tracks but since the garage and computer are in a different room for us, that becomes difficult.
Last:
When you are done recording, export it as an .mp3. But in order to do that you have to download lame.dll. The link is here: http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~raa110/audacity/lame.html (just find one that works for you). all it is is an .mp3 encoder. You cant export without it.
But thats the end to my egg. If it turns out good with high ratings and stuff then i will make another one on how to sue audacity. Thanks guys
