OK, if you don’t know what a poi is, its the balls at the end of the chains that people swing, twirl and spin around their body. Sometimes, there poi are on fire, adding a whole new realm of fun to the activity. I am going to instruct you on the making of such a poi, because its more than just a tennis ball on a string.
First, you have to chose the wick material for the poi. Since this is Rotten Eggs, I assume nobody is going out to buy supplies, so we will go with some denim. Take a pair of old worn out blue jeans, and cut them into strips that are about 2" wide. The strips should be as long as you can have them, so there can be more in the way of flame.
You will also need the following:
1 x 1/8" eye bolt per head
1 x 1/8" nuts and lock nuts per head
2 x 1 1/4" fender washers per head
These are for attaching the poi heads to the chain/rope.
Ok, since I cant describe this well in words, I am going to throw in some animation soon, so sit still.
You are going to be folding the material over its self until you have no more fabric left. Then you will be "skewering" the wicks onto the eye bolts, and tightening them down with the nuts and washers. OK, here is the animation for you.
You will be doing this for both of the heads, and then you will be attaching the heads to the chains.
When you have the heads made, you will need to attach them to your chain/rope. The chain should be about the length from where your thumb attaches to your arm, to where your arm attaches to your body.
This is probably going to be about 22" - 26", but it varies. Unless you want to just hold the chain in your hand, you will need a "handle". I took two short lengths of a small dowel and put another eye bolt in each of these, and attached them to the chain as well.
The fuel that should be used is NOT gasoline! This burns too quickly, and will ruin the heads. I recommend that you use either kerosene, Coleman camp fuel, or lamp fuel. You will soak the poi wick in the fuel until it they are saturated, and then you will light them. I am not sure what else should be added, so if someone has any suggestions, I am open to them. If someone has any questions, please ask them. I will have pictures up shortly.
