Allright, so personally my self I hate ipods. Can’t stand them. And the organization of the songs and artists sucks. Anywho, this is an egg about firmware modification... to the max. If your not sure what firmware is Wikipedia can help

So the firmware I am talking about is called Rockbox. I currently have it on my Sansa e200. It works pretty good. But this egg is about an ipod update. This is only doable via windows computer and possibly Linux. You can do it through a mac but its slightly more difficult.

I must apologize but I can not provide pics of it working on an ipod cause my camera has a problem of flying into the wall, aswell as I am doing this egg in school.

First of all, this voids your warranty. So unless you think your going to break it in the near future don’t bother with this unless you read the section on recovery.

Allright, so first things first, you need a FIRST GENERATION IPOD
That would be the one with the stainless steel back and plastic front. DO not try and do this to a second gen ipod or you will wish you hadent.

Quote:
iPod 4th gen (grayscale and color), 5th/5.5th gen (Video - 30GB and 60GB models only), 1st gen Nano and Mini 1st/2nd gen

^ from the site.

thats all you can do this to for the ipod.

now that we have that bs out of the way.

Be sure to have 7-zip or something similar to that.

You first need to download the firmware updater/patcher to prepare the ipod for rockbox.
note that all links are direct download
You can get that here:
http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/win32/ipodpatcher.exe

Second Thing you need is the actual .mi4 file for it

you can download that from this link:

http://build.rockbox.org/dist/build-ipodnano/rockbox.zip

If you want some cool themes like the xbox dashboard for example, you can get them here:

http://www.rockbox-themes.org/index.php?res=176x132x16

Now what you need to do is get the patcher working, it is used by dos/command prompt.

Be sure that your ipod is plugged in and run the program. Press "I" no quotes and hit enter. now be patient here. its changing around your ipod. it will eventually say success or something like that. hit enter to close.

now unzip the rockbox folder and you should come across a folder called .rockbox

copy that into the ROOT of your mp3 player.
ROOT for people who do not know what that means is the player its self as in drive E: or what ever your computer recognizes it as. Do not put the file anywhere else or you will brick your player.
Brick meaning turning your $200 ipod into a paperweight.

after that unplug your ipod and hold the center button and the menu button to reboot your ipod.

If all goes well you should see the yellow rockbox banner after a few seconds.

Now if you want themes just download it and make sure that when you unzip the file the file that came out is called .rockbox

if it isn’t it means that rockbox fucked up and you cant use it. just copy it into the root folder and hit yes to all. unplug your ipod and go to

Now for the grand finale, if you notice when you gosettings>browse themes> and select the theme you downloaded and it will apply.

Now for the grand finale you will notice that in the plugins secion you will notice a game called Doom.
thats right. doom.

so immediately you go to play it and it doesnt work

!!!!?!!!?!?!?!?

but all is not lost.

now there is a little bit to do to make it work. so all i am going to do is provide a link with a step by step guide to make it work.

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/PluginDoom

That is pretty much it.
Thanks for taking the time to read my egg.
