In this egg i am going to explain a bit about the history of cockney rhyming slang, and some commen phrases!
As a proud Essex/london boy i know a bit about it, haha!..
Anyway, for those of you who dont know cockney rhyming slang is, its different ways of saying phrases, but what rhyme with the original phrase if you get me, such as "Scooby Doo" for clue.
"I havent got a scooby doo mate"
The history of cockney rhyming slang has no definate explanation to say where it came from. Some people believe it may have come from thieves throughout london using it as a sort of code..For example, If a thief wanted to tell his mate somthing such as "Grab the money then run away" he may say somthing like this..
It is also believed that people would use it to be able to talk about things infront of the police without them knowing exactly what is being said.
Rhyming slang can get very complicated if you are not upto date with it! Slang gets shortened and made more complex, such as ’Boat Race’, meanig face often gets shortened to just ’Boat’. Example: I couldnt see his boat.
Cockney rhyming slang could come in handy at any time if you need to say something, but know the person you dont want hearing understands the slang..
Some commonly used rhyming slang are:
Apples and pears - Stairs
Brittany Spears - Beers
Nelson Mandellas - Stella’s (Beer)
Uri Gellas - Stella’s (Beer)
Gypsy Kiss - Piss
Scooby Doo - Clue
Pot of glue - Clue
Donald Duck - Fuck
Lemon and lime - Time
Niagra Falls - Balls
Harry Holt - Bolt (Run away)
See ya later - Baked Potata
Ball and bat - Twat
Dog n Bone - Phone

May 28, 2007 7:53 am - .. If you dont know what a cockney is its basically someone from east london, but nowadays most people from london, or even areound london are classed as cockneys. The slang is not spoken by thieves or by people that are talking about somthing secretive anymore, but that is why it was believed to of been invented.
