The Art Of Parkour
I – What is Parkour
II – How Should I Start
III - Conditioning
IV - Techniques
V – Extra Information
What Is Parkour (Le) Parkour is a newly introduced French Sport. It was founded by David Belle, who apparently says it is created using notions of ‘escape’ and ‘reach’. Parkour includes many techniques (or moves) which help get you from position a to position b. This could be as simple as jumping off a small wall or vaulting over a table. Parkour takes lots of confidence and tons of practice; it’s not something you should do once a month if you want to get good. It’s quite hard to get started and know what your body is good at. The worst part is if you do something wrong: your body will continuously tell you to do it the other way. Let you teach your body, not your body teach you. Always remember: parkour needs flow. Object a to b to c to d and back.
How Should I Start Each session of parkour should start with conditioning. So that means if you are starting parkour for the first time ever, you actually need to do conditioning before that. Conditioning is explained in Chapter III. The first things you should focus on doing with parkour are the Landing Roll, Lazy Vault and then once you have mastered the Landing Roll small drops. Some people start with the monkey vault as well, but many find this difficult.
Conditioning You should start with stretching. You may not use everything with the practice you are doing but you should stretch everything. Start with your ankles, then your legs (all parts of your legs) your hips, your arm and your neck. Once you have done this you are ready to start parkour. When you are not doing parkour Conditioning has to be done as well. This includes things like press-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and everything that will keep you fit and healthy.
Techniques
Landing Roll The landing roll is the most important step of parkour as it stops you from breaking your spine, legs or even neck when landing. It should be done by jumping off a small height at first, placing your hands down (like in the picture) and rolling diagonally along your back then standing straight back up ready to run. This should be practiced with little or not jump at first to prevent injury.
Speed Vault and Lazy Vault Speed vault is done by placing one hand on a rail and swinging your legs over. It is that simple, although maybe not that easy to master. A lazy vault is a bit harder (quite similar though) and looks better. You simple do exactly as before but halfway over you place your other hand on the rail and push yourself more for maximum speed.
Cat Leap This is done by jumping towards a wall. You should hit the wall feet first and then grab the top of it with your hands (this looks like a cat position when they climb up a wall). This is also quite hard to master.
Extra Information For those confused, Free Running IS NOT parkour. They were both created with different people and free running is a more competitive sport. Do not get the two confused. I hope you enjoyed my egg and have learnt something new.

WARNING: If injuries are caused by these activities it is your fault and you need to go to a doctor to check they are not serious.

Nov 23, 2007 4:42 pm - BEST EGG EVER this freakin rocks man. I love parkour, and I know I will always suck at it because the guys who do it are built like gymnists, compact but powerful. My problem is I’ve reached the point where if I wanted to actually be good and do flips and wall runs and balancing horizontal on a flag pole with just my arms, I would need to be disgustingly muscular. Still, I try to do the simple stuff cause it’s fun.
