A strong grip is crucial to success in martial arts, weightlifting , and other activities (such as a handshake). most people dont realize that your hand muscles need some exercise too and often don’t include this in their training routines unless you train in judo or some other type of grappling.
included here are a few activities to improve the strength of your grip and the overall health of your hands and fingers.
Isometric exercises: isometric pretty much means you are using your own body as resistance.
1. open your hand palm up and spread out your fingers. form a fist and squeeze and hold for about 5 seconds. repeat until your hand is tired. repeat with your other hand.
2. press your thumb and index finger together like your holding something small between them. press and hold for about 5 seconds. repeat with the rest of your fingers.
once these become easy for you and start to get boring (and they will pretty fast), you can start using things around the house for added resistance.
roll up and old T shirt and secure it with a rubberband. make sure it’s wide enough so your fingertips don’t touch and squeeze and hold like before.
tennis balls seem to work well too....
Brick pinch: grab a brick in each hand and hold it between your thumb and index fingers. lift them up and stretch your arms out. hold this position for at least a minute. repeat with all of your fingers if you can.
fingertip pushups: these are pretty straightforward, push ups on the tips of your fingers. start by doing these against a wall with your fingertips like this:
start by doing about 10 of these a day. when this becomes easy, either do more or step further from the wall so you put more weight into it. after a few weeks you can try to do them one handed or try them on the floor. bruce lee could do them on 2 fingers......
i don’t know who this guy is but still, wow.
pole stretch:
grab a section of 1 inch wooden dowel (or a piece of pipe) and hold your hands about shoulder width part. bring the pipe to your chest so your hands are beneath your pectoral muscles. now squeeze and pull your hands apart, like you’re trying to stretch the pole.
please comment and/or share any more ideas or exercises that you know of.

playing guitar and doing daily fretboard excercises will help in finger and hand strength dramatically.
but this would also help.

Jul 18, 2007 6:15 am - strong fingers are also very important in archery, when it comes to pulling back, when i was at the world championships, i was so nervous I accidentally released before i meant to, made me get a miss. First miss I’ve gotten in around 4 and a half years for that event. But these sort of things happen all the time in big events.
