I am going to help you guys install Rockbox on your Ipod. Rockbox is an alternative set of firmware for your ipod. It will let you play iDoom, change themes backgrounds and fonts, play some old arcade games and get zoom on your pictures if you catch my drift.
Rockbox is supported on the following Ipods:
Ipod Color/Photo,
1st generation Nano,
Ipod 4th generation grayscale,
Ipod Video,
3rd generation Ipod and
Ipod Mini
**If you decide to go through with this it will void your warranty and could ruin your ipod if you install the wrong build on your ipod** (ex: Video firmware on a Nano.)
**I am also not responsible if somehow you manage to mess your Ipod up** -----------------------------------------------------
For the following I will be using a Nano but I have done to my video and allot of other peoples Ipods. Ive never messed up an Ipod.
Make sure your Ipod shows up in My Computer, it’s in the setting is in itunes.
Step 3
Downloads
Go to www.rockbox.org, click on current build in the top left hand corner, scroll down and find you ipod then click and save the .zip to your desktop. This is the data for Rockbox.
Then go back to the main page and click on manual under current build, find your Ipod and click on online, then find installation ( Its #2 under contents), click on it and find and download the boot loader (in section 2.2.4, Installing the Boot loader). The boot loader is the file that commands the Ipod to open Rockbox.
Step 4
First of all click on the .zip and unzip the file .rockbox to your Ipod. It is very important the file is called .rockbox.. Make sure you only have to click on one file before it opens into the data.
Step 5
This is really easy. Click on the boot loader you downloaded. It should be called ipod patcher. It should open up a command prompt window and say something about detecting your ipod. It will give you three options i,u and c. i installs the boot loader, u uninstalls it and c cancels. Type i. Let it install, it could take 5 minutes or so and it probably wouldn’t be smart to cancel it while it’s installing. If you want to uninstall Rockbox at any time plug your Ipod in and open ipod patcher and just type u instead of i.
Step 6
Once the boot loader is done unplug your ipod. It will automatically restart your ipod and boot into Rockbox. If there is just a black screen and it says error you probably unzipped .rockbox wrong (I did that once, it was only called rockbox) Just plug it in a and try again.
By now you have probably installed Rockbox with no problem.
Using the Software
Just because you installed alternative firmware doesn’t mean you uninstalled the apple firmware. You can still boot into the ipod firmware if you want. To do this restart the ipod (hold select and menu) when you see the apple icon put hold on for about five seconds and then take it off. Then you can use the original firmware.
When you first start up Rockbox you won’t be able to listen to music. To listen to it click database. It should say “Database is not ready. Initialize now? And hit select. Then let it do its thing. On my video it took about ten minutes (2100 songs) on a 2g nano it took a one minute (370 songs). After it is done reboot it (hold select and menu) When you start listening to music and it plays the song ahead of or behind the song you want to listen to repeat is probably or you interrupted your database when it was initializing. To turn repeat off go to settings, general settings, playback, repeat and then off. To intitialize it go to settings, general settings, database, initialize now. When it is done go to update now and about ten minutes later restart your ipod.
To put pictures on your Rockpod they have to be in the photos folder in the main file on your ipod (the first folder after you click on it in my computer)
Just look around and choose settings you want. Familiarize your self with the menus and the controls. They are pretty confusing when you first use Rockbox.
Extras Well now that you’ve done all the boring crap you probably wanna play doom. It’s pretty simple. Go to www.rockbox.org and click extras in the top left hand corner. That will have all the stuff to pimp your ipod.
To install doom download the doom plugin (doom shareware demo) and the doom freeware. Then open up .rockbox and create a file called doom in it. Then simply drag those two files into it. But make sure you unzip them first.
Themes are pretty easy too. All you have to do is download a theme from extras and unzip it. It will have four files in it. (theme, font, wps, and fonts) (you have to make the fonts folder just like you made the doom folder). Then all you have to do is drop the themes in the appropriate files on your ipod.
This is a pretty cool piece of firmware that isn’t to hard to install. It’s great to impress your friends with and even make a bit of money. I told a bunch of losers at school I had to order them a chip of the internet and open up their ipod. They actually believed it and paid thirty dollars each! After a few days you can start doing your own stuff with it like putting in your own backgrounds and I think there is a video player for Ipods that do not play videos.

You’re putting rockbox with the apps on your iPod.
The real way of customizing it: different faceplates, changing the original apple firmware of the ipod, etc.

Jul 07, 2007 2:01 am - hey i did this to my 30 gig ipod video and its workin great so far and ive got themes and shot working great. ive given u a nice 5 for doin such a fuken sweet job. one thing tho, CAN I WATCH VIDEOS ON MY IPOD ANYMORE???
Jul 10, 2007 3:06 pm - Ok to watch videos just restart your Ipod (hold menu and select) after a few seconds you will see the apple. As soon as you see it just put hold on for about 10 seconds. It will start up your ipod normaly.
