In this egg I will go over all of the baics of slingshots,as well as small game hunting with a slingshot.
1)Choosing your slingshot: There are many slingshots on the market today, they come with a range of different sights braces, and stabalizers.I would recomend buying one at slingshots.comI have the FS-1 model with RR-2 bands, this is in my opinion, perfect for small game.
2)ammunition: One of the slingshot’s greatest advantages is the low cost and availability of ammo.these are the most common forms slingshot ammunition.
a)pebbles:probably the most commonly used by kids since the invention of the slingshot, easily attainable, good for practice or just mesing around.A bit too innacurate for actual hunting.
b)marbles:You can buy marbles in packs of 100 at almost any dollar store, they are more accurate than pebbles and are good for practive, because they are a bit too bulky they are not ideal for hunting, but can be used.
c)steel ball ammo:this is the ideal ammo for hunting small game such as rabbit squirrel and birds,it can also be purchased at slingshots.com in bags of 120 or in bulk(recomended they come in two sizes 5/16" and 3/8".I use 5/16" because they are smaller travel faster delivering more force against the target(or prey) and above all more accurate.
3)practice target now that you have a slingshot and ammunition it’s time to start practicing.I would not recomend that you just start shooting at things in your backyard all willy-nilly,as you way break a window or some other form of personal property and because stray shots can(and eventuall will)ricochet back and hit youand it will hurt)also,if you do this you will run out of ammo rather quickly,so to solve this problem I designed the Ammo saver 3000 well,it’s actually just a box with some shirts stuffed into it
as you can see, mine is about 6" by 12"(It’s actually the box my power bands came in)About the size of a large rabbit(mind you,I live in suburban NJ,they don’t get to big around here)it has two t-shirts stuffed snuggly inside so that the shot will enter and stay in the box,the side flap opens up to empty it after a session of target practice.
I’ve even gone through the trouble of drawing a rabbit that is more the size I am likely to see.if you’re less artistic you way like to print out this target and tape it to the box. It is recomended that you become proficient in hitting a target smaller than the game you will be hunting.
remember "aim small miss small"
(kind of corny since it’s from the patriot, but it’s still true)
4)the hunt after a few days or a weak or so of practice you should become proficient enough with your slingshot to hit your practice target almost everytime from 20’ away.but this doesn’t mean your ready to go hunting, you still have to find the rabbits if you’re going to shoot them.
I would start off by going to this site:
http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/nature/tracking.shtml#Large%20Scale%20Sign it’s not my site and I don’t take credit for the info,it’s from tom browns tracking school and I would recomend reading it,and remembering it.very usefull stuff.
in addition to that,I will also tell you where you are most likley to find common cotton-tail rabbit.
they like to live in thick brambles where it is hard for a predator to sneak up on them.they live mostly on a diet of grass and clover.they are largly crepuscular, which means they are most active durring the twilight hours.
so with these bits of information it is safe to say that if you go to a field of grass and clover that is near thick woods during twilight, you are very, very likely to find some rabbits.
ok,so now you have some rabbits, and and the ability to launch small steel balls into them at 450+ feat per second, you’re ready to make your first kill(or attempt to at least)
the kill You wust first get within range of the animal...if the animal is grazing in a field it is best to slowlycreep the woods along the side of the field(and yes, there probably will be woods alongside of the field because rabbits do not like to go out into fields unless they can easily run into cover)
if the animal is close enough to the woods for you to shoot from the trees you should do so.
but you should never ever shoot an animal from more than 20’,that is the maximum distance for a slingshot to be lethal,or atl east injur the animal enough for you to kill it(we’ll get to that later)
but 10’ is the ideal distance and you should practice stalking your prey so that you can get within 10’ so that you might make more kills more often.
if the animal is to far from the trees you will have to stalk it into the field,do this by crouching down so that you are about 3’ tall and walking slowly,if the rabbit looks at you or turns it’s ears to you or perks upright suddenly and stops moving DON’T MOVE,wait for the animal to look away and avert it’s attention before you proceed.once you are in range it’s time to talke the shot.slowly load a pellet into the pouch of your slingshot and pull it back as far as you can while still being able to properly aim,and fire.
but you cannot just shoot the rabbit anywhereas you would risk injuring it and having it escape.
take a look at the picture above(the one used for the target)
you have two major options for shooting your prey:
1)headshotprobably the only way to ensure instant death, don’t do it.as you will most likely miss and the animal will run away.
2)chest/shoulder area(large circle above front legs,in the picture):this is what I mostly aim for,itf you hit the animal here it will break its shoulder bone and the animal will be stunned, disoriented and confused enough for you to run up and kill it,you can do this either by holding it down with your foot and shooting it again, execution style in the head,or simply running up and stomping it’s head,I know this seams cruel but it’s the quickest way to put the animal out of pain.
now that you have a dead rabbit you will want to bring it home,if you plan on hunting more I would recomend carrying the game you have already taken on a piece of rope, just tie the rope around it’s hind feat and sling it over your shoulder.
5)Butchering I could sit here and type out step-by-step instructions on butchering your kill, skinning it,tanning the hide etc.but I wouldn’t be able to explain it very well, and you wouldn’t get the amount of knowledge neaded to succesfully skin a rabbit.
instead,I will send you to an article written in 1983 by Kathy Kellogg for mother earth news magazine, this is the article I learned how to butcher and clean rabbits from,it is very informative and tells you everything you need to know.
and thats about it,I hope you’ve enjoyed this egg,and I hope it helps you experience the primal excitment one can only get through killing a meal for himself.
special thanks to:
Tom brown, for teaching me almost everything I know about nature through your books.
Rick Curtis, for providing the notes on tracking
Kathy Kellogg, for the artice on butchering rabbits

i no i c/p’d my eggs but this is c/p’d i seen it on one of the sites on google 1* beacause i cant prove it
really?you seen it on another website?you don’t say!thats remarkable,on account of the fact that I sathere today and typed every word of this, and websites I linked to were cited and given credit to.
thank you,and good day sir!

aim small , mis small? wtf is that meant to mean
It means that if you aim at a precise location and your projectile strays a little bit, you still have a good chance of hitting the target. Whereas if you just aim in the general direction of your target and you miss, you probably won’t hit it.

Jul 25, 2007 1:53 pm - slingshots can be funny in certain areas. such as shooting pricks like you in the balls so you can not contaminate the rest of the planet’s population. theres a fucking quote for you.
