You may have noticed iv been very quite on the egg front recently but its summer, i have better things to do. But there have been some seriously bad eggs on survival so im going to make a better one. The chances are youl never have to use this (ever) but better safe than sorry. Its also fun when your camping.
*NOTE*For most of this il be relying on the most excellent survival expert Ray Mears. If you watch his stuff youl probably recognise some of it. His best guides are called ‘ray mears bushcraft, ray mears world of survival, ray mears extreme survival and ray mears wild food. In fact anything with ‘ray mears’ in the title is probably full of survival stuff.
Also for almost all of this (except the A-frame shelter and fish trap and a few others) you need at least a knife, preferably an axe aswell. If you don’t even have a knife, concentrate on finding a place where animals cant reach you. Youre almost certainly going to die and you wouldn’t want your corpse to be all chewed up.
What you need
you need 4 basic things to survive any situation:
water
shelter
fire
food
Iv listed these in descending order of most important, but depending on where you are and your current situation this order can change. Shelter isnt that important in the desert at night, because fire can keep you warm and you dont have rainy weather to worry about. But in the day youl burn like a jew in 1944 germany without shelter.
how to get these:
WATER Your first step is to find the water. This normally wont be a big problem, but it is ALWAYS a priority. Its ’secondary in importance only to air’, to quote Ray. The two main ways you can find water are from rivers, lakes, ponds and streams, or you can dig for it. Dig down far enough and youl always find water. There are other ways, like cutting certain trees (not found in most countries) open or building stills for sea water, or solar stills for plants, but these give you hardly any compared to the effort you use. So dont use them unless you dont have a choice. The tree one can be used if you live in Aus. Just find a paperbark tree with a bulge in the trunk and cut the bulge. Its already purified so can be drank straight away.
For the rest of us its more difficult to purify. There are two ways to do it. Get your water (lake, river) and pour it through a filter, then boil it. The filter can be made from a plastic bottle with holes in the bottom. Fill 1/3 with moss, then 1/3 with sand and gravel, then the final 1/3 with more moss. Pouring water through this filters out any particles, but not bacteria. Thats what the boiling is for.
The other way to purify is to add 3 drops bleach per gallon of water. (after filtering), and leaving for an hour. If it smells a bit like chlorine, youre good 2 go. If it doesn’t, add another drop and wait.
FOOD Makes sense to have this after water. The most important food youl need is carbohydrates. You can get these from plants and the most useful part is the roots, but some plants are poisonous and it can be hard to tell which ones are. So to be safe you should process all the roots unless youre sure its safe, to remove potential poisons. Dig them up and roast them in a fire. Now peel them (use your hands, unless youre a retard born without fingers) and grate them or chop them up. Now put them in a bag/ mosquito headnet/ basket, and soak them in a river or lake overnight. Now the poison will be gone and you can enjoy. But it probably tastes like raw spuds. Berries are good for sugar and what-not but they are more likely to be poisonous than the roots. If it tastes like burning, spit it out coz thts a bad sign. Heres some plants you can eat without processing: nettles (all parts – wilt them over a fire or boil them to get rid of stings), cattails (those big water plants - only the roots), and most plant roots found near the sea.
The next most important food youl need if youre staying out there for more than a week is protein. Normally eggs on this would say to go hunting but that’s normally difficult, and unless youre experienced at hunting with primitive weapons then theres hardly any chance of you being successful. So you need to either eat insects and worms or set traps. Fish traps are easiest to make. Find a tree with long flexible and straight branches (willow, hazel) and cut off lots. Now get some soft green tree bark and cut it into strips for string.
Make two hoops from branches. The hoops should be different sizes. One has to be small, about 6 or 7 inches across. The other should be as big as you can make it. Now use straight branches and your bark (as string) to make a sort of funnel from the two hoops. Now that that’s done, make another hoop about middle size. It has to be bigger than the small hoop but smaller than the big one. Lay the middle size hoop flat on the ground and get the longest sticks you can find. Build a sort of Indian tent around the hoop and tie the sticks in place. Now insert your funnel into your ‘tent’, small end first, (Pics at the bottom) and tie your whole structure together with more bark. By this stage you should have something that looks like a cone made of sticks, with a funnel made of sticks leading into it. Place this in a river with the open end facing downstream. Fish swim in but cant swin out.
Other traps such as snares are good if you can get wire but the fish one is best because it can be made if you have nothing atall with you, not even a knife. But having a knife will speed it up and make it a lot easier. If you don’t have wire and cant find a river, try making some kind of crushing trap for squirrels/ rodents using logs and sticks. Or dig a hole and cover it, putting bait in the middle. Mushrooms are good baits for squirrels. Squirrles are a good bait for bigger animals. Bigger animals are a good bait for people (if youre into that sort of thing)
SHELTER
Shelter is normally easy to make. Its easiest in the forest where you have lots of wood and sticks lying around. Pine forests are best. If youre in the snow, you can build a big pile and the dig your way into it, making a sort of igloo. Building a proper igloo from blocks of snow is hard. If youre in the desert, just find shade.
The most comm0nly used shelter in most situations is called the A frame shelter. It’s the easiest to make. Get two branches and make a capital A shape, big enough for you to fit in. Now lay one long branch (longer than you) at the top of the A, making a sort of incomplete bad-proportioned pyramid shape. Next lay lots of little baby branches along the long branch to give walls. Now just cover with leaves or leafy branches to make it waterproof and windproof. Pine branches are good for it. (Im going to put some pics in at the bottom) and stuff it full of dry grass for insulation. Now you can get in and be warm, dry and safe. This is not to be used in places like the jungle where you don’t want to be sleeping on the ground, what with scorpions and snakes and what-not.
If you lots of time before night comes, you can try building a better shelter, like a giant A-frame. This involves building a bed and building a big tent of sticks above it. (see pic at the bottom). Alternatively, build a bed and just add one steeply sloping wall to hold off rain. Now you can build a long fire alongside it for warmth.
If you’re too lazy to do that, build an Indian style teepee by just laying loads of long sticks around a central pole, then thatch it with leaves etc.
To build a bed, make two smaller A-shapes, and rest a strong stick over them. It should look like you’re about to spit roast the worlds smallest pig over the worlds smallest fire. Now build the same again about 6 feet away. Lay long sticks in between the two, and cover with grass or leaves for softness.
FIRE
3 ways of doing this without matches/ lighters.
a) magnifying glass
b) friction firelighting
c) sparks (from flint)
im goin 2 disregard the magnifying glass method completely because you probably wont have one with you. Apparently you can make one from ice by melting it into a lens shape, but in places where you get ice there probably wont be any of the other things you need.
If you have a knife you can do either friction firelighting or sparks. If you don’t have a knife youre stuck with sparks.
To light a fire using friction, gather your materials:
A dry stick
Another dry stick, thicker. Same type f wood.
A bit of dry bark (or your knife blade)
Tinder (dry moss, cotton wool etc.)
Sharpen one end of your thinner stick with a knife, and make a small hole in your bigger stick with the knife. Now twirl the sharp end around in the hole to make it bigger. Cut a V shaped notch into the side of the thicker stick, making sure it reaches the hole. Now place the thicker one flat on the ground, with a bit of bark or knife blade under the notch. Twirl the small stick around fast between your hands. This method is called the hand drill, and can take a lot of effort. When you do this for several minutes, a hot powder will collect in the notch, and you can use it to start fire. When it starts smoking, or even glowing, tip it into your tinder, cover it and blow. O and make sure the thinner stick is smoothe, try to remove any stubs of side branches, or theyl blister your hands.
A better way for friction firelighting is the ‘bow and drill’ method. Its faster and wont hurt your hands even if the stick isn’t smoothe, but seriously difficult to get the hang of. If you can do it, then do it, but if you’ve never done it before, stick with the hand drill method. Everybody can do the hand drill first time, but the bow can take hours of practice.
Starting fire with sparks has a lot to do with luck. Get a piece of tinder, as well as flint and iron (you can find lumps of iron on the beach, or in bogs, or dig and look for rusty coloured rocks, they normally contain it.) Alternatively get two piece of flint, or use flint and your knife blade. Now put your tinder on the ground and strike your rocks off each other. They make sparks. It can take a long time before one falls in the right place, but then you’re done. Blow the tinder to get flames.
AND NOW FOR PICTURES. NOTICE MY EXCELLENT PAINT SKILLS.

zero effort, zero stars.
Jul 29, 2007 4:50 pm - 5*s Oh, you probably should’ve added that you should head to lower areas in the land like depresses, valleys, or in between hills or mountains to find rivers or lakes.

complete lies noob. its all hand typed by me. though it was copied from ray mears on the tv. which leads me to wonder where he got it from in the first place, quite possibly from a survival guide now i think about it. but the pics are all mine, except that one at the end with the hand drill.
