I looked around the site but I haven’t found too many good eggs on Displacement. Displacement is when you put a metal into a solution containing another metal (for example CuS04). If the solid metal you put into the solution is more reactive than the on in solution, it will displace it and the less reactive metal will appear on the solid piece of metal in powder form.

Step One- How to get a metal as an Ion.

Ingredients- Metal you want to powder, HCl, Blue Litmus paper

1. Place some HCL in to a glass container.
2. Put pieces of the metal in to the HCl. This will produce Hydrogen.
3. It will also produce a salt of the metal you put in.
4. Put some litmus paper into the solution to see if it is still acidic (So u don’t burn your hands). If it changes colour put more metal into the solution.
5. You now have your metal salt with water.

Extracting the Metal

Ingredients- a more reactive metal than the one in the solution, a large battery, Crocodile clips, paper towel.

1. Attach a wire to each of the ports of the battery. Attach crocodile clips to the end.
2. Attach a piece of the more reactive metal to each port. Put these into the solution. Make sure they are not touching each other.
3. In about 10 seconds you will see a coating of powder on the solid metal. Leave it for a while and let it start to build up.
4. If you want heaps of powder you will need to replace the solid metal because it dissolves.
5. Wipe the piece of metal on a paper towel so all the powder comes of and let it dry.

Here is the reaction. The metal is Zinc and you will get zinc powder

Reaction- HCl+ Zn=H+ ZnCl

Displacement Reaction- ZnCl(aq)+Al(s)=Zn+AlCl

You now have powdered metal. You can use any metal solution that dissolves in water. Sulphates, Chlorides, ect. Obviously u can not displace K,Na,Li because they explode when placed in water.

Hope this makes your life a little bit easier

Finally an egg with knowledgeable content! Great Job!, keep it up. An absolute 5 for you!

nice job. 5*

I brought it up from a 4 with a 5 vote.

Listen little kiddies, just because you arent intelligent enough to carry out an egg, doesnt mean you should rate an egg a 0.

This is not c/p. I got this from my science book and by testing it. Why is the rating so low?

I just pasted a few phrases from this egg in to google and nothing indicated that this was c/p. This is a really good egg? Why is it only rated two and a half stars?

5*

Its rated 2.5 stars because all of the stupid little kids who dont appreciate an egg on anything but explosives and fire rate it down becasue they dont have the mental capacity to do such a project.

Just to spite these little shits, im 5ing his profile.

This doesnt work.
1. there is enough room for both metals, and the more reactive one will just dissolve, again.
2. Any powdered metal under acid will dissolve instantly as soon as its made.
3. Your chemistry is off.

Trustme, it really isnt that easy to break the chlorine bond with a metal. Its just, not that easy.

I thought it’d be on the site before but I guess not.
Nice use of the electrochemical series and laws of displacement to demonstrate this practicality, 5* from me.

5*, but I’m sure anyone who stayed in school would know this. At least you took the time to put it into words that most people on this site would understand.

i think it would be easyer to go out and buy the powder. because its most likely cheaper than all the ingredients for this.
but this is still pretty rad
really well done, might be a c/p tho. but i dont care.
4*

no. only if the metal is basic and in equal amounts.

Hmm, this is a good idea. Good egg, has plenty of detail 5*

5* Nice I like it but it seems quite complicated for what your trying to do.

donman

Aug 18, 2007 11:56 pm - Wont work
The metal that comes out of solution will turn into a metal oxide because of the presence of water. It may be more feasible with sulfuric acid and its respective salt. For the most part this wont work well.....

Yes it is that easy philly dude. It does work with chlorides. It works with any soluable salt.

Awesome, somebody on RE that didn’t drop out of 6th grade! 4 stars because my fifth star is broken. Happy thursday.

anyone who said that this isn’t useful for explosives has not heard of thermite, and since i’m sure everyone here knows what it is, i don’t thin that i need to specif anything more.

5* btw, great job did this in chem class ith AgNO3 and Cu wire, but needed no electricity, depends on how reactive it is.
