This is a how-to on making pneumatic potato launchers by ZmAn.. , my neighbor and me. These do not use hairspray or any other flammables. These projectiles are propelled by compressed air and can go up to 100 psi (pounds per square inch). If you do not glue right or use too much psi, there could be shrapnel sent flying everywhere and will be resulted with major injuries and possibly death. Make sure you follow my instructions very precisely. Here are the pros and cons of a pneumatic cannon:
Pros:
Safer than using hairspray
More powerful than hairspray (Mine shoots well over 200 yards)
Saves money in the longrun.
Very silent, no loud bang.
Not much kickback.
Fairly cheap. ($31 dollars not including bike pump)
Cons:
Bike pump needed. It takes a while to get enough pressure. It is more convenient with air compressor but they are much more expensive.
Here are the materials:
(Note: none of the pipes and fittings are to be threaded. Threaded means able to be screwed into or onto another part.)
Pipes And Fittings:
They are all listed on image. Eggmail me if the image doesnt work.
1x #1
1x #2
1x #3
2x #4
1x #5
1x #6
2x #7 (Has to be 90 angle)
PVC Cement (Buy one that dries in 2 hours)
PVC Primer
Bike Innertube
Tools:
Hacksaw
File
Drill with bit size of bicycle valve spout
Optional:
Electrical Tape
Paint
Football Tee
Preparation:
Make sure you have all the pipe parts. You can find them at Menards or Lowes. Menards is cheaper. The PVC Cement and Primer should be in the PVC aisle. Also make sure you have the tools. You can get the bike inner tube for 3 bucks at Kmart. When you get your pipes, try to get rid of some of the dust and dirt that may be on them.
Now you need to start cutting pipes. After cutting, make sure to file the ends to get rid of little bits of pipe and PVC dust. Cut two 2.5 inch pieces of #1 (1-1/4 inch diameter PVC pipe).
Cut a 4 inch piece out of the same pipe. The rest of the pipe left over will be the barrel. The barrel can always be shortened if you want.
Then cut a 1’ or 12" piece of #2 (3" diameter PVC) With the file try to make sure all the ends are flat. They dont have to be perfect but the gun will last longer if they are flat.
Cut a circle out of the bike innertube so it looks like the picture. Then take the drill and the drill bit that fits the valve spout and drill a hole in the middle of the #3 (1-1/4" Endcap)
Assembly: Again make sure pipes are fairly clean and that the pipes aren’t threaded. Take out the PVC Cement and PVC Primer. Pry open lids with screwdriver. But be careful, the primer is purple and will stain. These 2 also give off some strong fumes, just dont sniff it and you will be fine. Also the glue only hardens on plastic. First you need to poke the inner tube valve spout through the hole you drilled. Apply glue to the top of the rubber part, whats left of the inner tube. Now pu#*@! through the hole. Take pliers and pull it out as far as it will go. Be careful not to strip the metal part. Now apply glue on the outside around the hole. Wait about five minutes and then take the endocarp and apply primer around the side, dont use too much. Then apply primer to the inside of a #4 on the small end. Wait 30 seconds to dry. Next apply glue on the same places you primed. Put them together quickly and put pressure down on it for a minute. Now it is basically cant be pulled out but can still leak air so set it somewhere to dry. Now you know how to glue and prime. I will just tell you the parts to connect now.
Prime and glue the other #4 to the #5. Prime and glue the 4" piece of 1-1/4" to the 2 #7 (Elbows) so that it looks like it does in the picture on the part where it makes the turn on the gun.
Next glue and prime the two 2.5" pieces of #1 into each end of the ball valve. Prime and glue one of the pegs in the ball valve into the #5 so that the ball valve is upside down. Next prime and glue the foot long piece of #2 into the #4 that is attached to the ball valve. Prime and glue one of the elbows onto the other side of the ball valve. Prime and glue the part with the bike innertube valve spout to the other end of the foot long #2, this is your chamber. Prime and glue the barrel onto the other elbow. It is now complete. Wait 4 hours after completion to test. If you test it too soon it could come apart or create an air leak.
Optional:
You could wedge a football tee between the chamber and barrel for extra support.
You could file down the end of the barrel to make it kind of sharp to shove down potatoes easier.
You could paint it or wrap it in electrical tape. I suggest this to cover up the purple primer stains and to make it more hidden at night.
Firing:
Shove a potato or whatever projectiles you are using down the barrel. Use a broomstick to shove it down the barrel. Close the ball valve. Take the cap off of the valve spout. Hook the pump up to the valve spout and pump. I would suggest doing about 50 psi your first try and gradually add more psi till you get to 100. NEVER SURPASS 100!! EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! Then take the pump off after pumping. Put the cap back on the valve spout. Hold up right so that barrel is on top. Place one hand on barrel and the other on the valve. Aim at your target and release your valve. I have seen apples at 100 psi go through half inch plywood so be careful.
If done right, at 100 psi it should shoot well over 200 yards. My friend, ZmAn.., will put a post on the forum about different types of ammo for this gun soon.
Have fun with your new pneumatic potato launcher. OH and by the way, our gun is called the Hindu Hunter. Again this was created by ZmAn.. and Blank. |

 | Feb 05, 2007 4:04 pm - wow, thats nearly EXACTLY like mine, but mine has a steel ball valve, and ints on the top ( they turn faster)...... and it cost $32.20.... five stars for you. | |
