This is Schenley, Pennsylvania, which boasts a population of 74. Its located where the once flood-prone Kiskiminetas (Kiski) River flows into the mighty Allegheny, and is only accessable by way of a long, hilly road. Theres not much left now perhaps a dozen houses and a post office. But, from the end of Prohibition to about 1978, the Schenley Distillery churned out untold bottles of some of Americas finest rye whiskey. Along with U. S. Steel and Allegheny Ludlum Steel, the Schenley Distillers was a big source of employment and income for thousands in the Alle-Kiski valley.
Some abandoned automobiles and construction equipment at the distillery have 1978 registration stickers on them. Schenley Distillers also had operations in Ohio and Kentucky, which have since been abandoned, and currently squeezes grains into booze in Canada. But Schenley, PA, is where the whole operation began.
The Distilley is still open, as some buildings are in decent shape, and are currently used by other companies. Eljer, which manufactures toilets and other porcelain fixtures, has operations here, as well as 5 miles upstream in Ford City, PA. All told, its about the size of a small, urban, college campus. If you come, bring food, as there are no places to purchase any, and your fishing gear.
Anyway, there are several pictures to click at. The place has an odd beauty to it. I hope it stands for years to come before someone decides to knock over the buildings and "redevelop" the site. |

 | Nov 28, 2004 11:46 am - Cool, too bad most of the pics from the old RE site are missing. |

 | Dec 11, 2004 12:03 am - I’ve got the pictures on my computer, and on a remote server. I reckon I wasn’t at a high enough level to post them, but may have higher clearances now. Or, I can simply embed them in the text with the Img tag. |

The Schenley Distillery, identified in the news as "an old industrial park," was the scene of a murder-suicide when someone drive their car off a boat ramp into the Allegheny River.

Here&rs uo;s the text, in case the link goes dead:
LEECHBURG, Pa. -- Authorities have identified two bodies found in a submerged car in the Allegheny River as a man and a woman who were last seen leaving a bar five days ago.
State police Friday used tow trucks to pull the white sedan out of the river, where it was floating just offshore near an industrial park in Gilpin Township, Armstrong County.
Inside, state police and Armstrong County Coroner Robert Bower said they found Eric Roberts, 46, of Export, and Lisa LeAnn Westwood, 36, of Schenley.
State police Trooper Joe Murphy said the two were last seen Monday evening at a bar in nearby Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County.
Authorities said there were no visible signs of trauma on the bodies and nothing initially appeared to be wrong with the car, which Roberts had borrowed from his boss.
Autopsies are scheduled for Saturday.
I’ll put the picture up later if THAT link also goes dead. |
