First, a word on the information systems used in fast food restaurants. For more than 20 years, orders are entered on a computer into a database. The kitchen has monitors displaying different "views," that is, the grill station shows the sandwiches, the drink station shows only the drinks, the fry station shows only the fries, et cetera. When you change your order, the "views" automatically update within seconds, adding or removing lines from your order.
Burger King, on the other hand, is stuck in the 1950’s. They enter orders on a crummy FasFax register. It prints a receipt, but orders are simply shouted to the jabronies in the kitchen. That introduces human error into the system, and mistakes are common. Really, if I wanted to remember things while at work, I wouldn’t waste my talents shoveling gristly patties through the flame-broiler tunnel.
A surly-looking female manager was running back and forth between the register on the counter and the one at the drive thru. I approached the counter.
H-Dogg: Sure, a number-1 Value Meal, add heavy onions on the Whopper.
Jabronie (shouting): WHOPPER HEAVY ONIONS FRY COKE!
(she puts some keystrokes on the lousy little FasFax computer)
Jabronie: Isthatforhere?
H-Dogg: Right!
Jabronie: $4.38.
I pulled out a wad of quarters. To my dismay, there were only 14 of them, totaling $3.50.
H-Dogg: Could I just get the Whopper with heavy onions?
(more keystrokes)
Jabronie: That’s $2.13. Your order number is 666. (tears off the receipt)
Now, she didn’t shout the corrected order back to the kitchen so they were still making fries and a 20 oz. Coke.
Jabrone 2: Order 666? Anyketchuporsaucestoday?
H-Dogg: Ketchup please.
She tossed the ketchup packets on the tray, which contained the Whopper, the fries, and the 20 oz. Coke, which was not as flat and watery as usual. I’m not guaranteeing this will work for you, but it’s worth a shot.
