I get out of work that day (which was also my last day working there, I got fired) and I rode my friends bike back to his house. I relax in his garage for a hot minute and I go for a walk since he’s at work.
It was a fine Saturday afternoon and one of the churches was in service.
I decided it was a good day to check out the steeple again. I sit down on the staircase that leads up to the balcony and wait for the service to start. Everybody stands up and they open with a prayer or whatever and I sneak upstairs. The door to the steeple is in a narrow hallway and it’s always unlocked, since it has NO lock.
I slip in and the door bangs on the rope for the bell. I thought about pulling it but I didn’t want to bring attention to myself.
I go up the rickety stairs
And come to an area that looks like this:
It’s darker then that, this was a 15 second exposure.
That leads up to where the bell is. I’ve been up there but I didn’t want to venture any farther up. Yes, I got scared, laugh it up, besides this egg is about an abandoned factory, not a church. This is just all the shit I did before my friend and I hit up the factory.
As I was leaving and walking down the stairs some old lady stared at me walking down the stairs and I just walked out and went to an "abandoned" parking garage. It was built in 1976 and was recently (last year) found to be structurally unsafe. Now police men officers sit in their cars and do whatever police men officers do.
(Want to see a shitty egg of mine that I did in the past? Click that link)
The local asshats decided it would be funny to set fire to the place (Which is a superfund site, which means that there is hazardous materials on site) which was quelled quickly by the local men in red.
After I left the Foundry I went back into town and snapped this shot:
Just a kickass old building I’d love to explore. I blocked out the # for their sake.
I went back to the garage and sat on the top floor and smoked a cigarette and enjoyed the view. On a clear day you can see Lake Ontario. It started to rain so I headed back to my friends garage and sat around playing Scrabble with myself.
Now thats everything I did prior to exploring the factory that day.
Please read these to get a better understanding of what I’m typing.
Part 1 Part 2
--------
We grab flashlights and breech the fence with out a problem as usual. We stop, look and listen for any signs of life. As to our surprise we hear a dude talking to somebody and we head into the warehouse with all the wood and shit. Sneaking around with a tripod and a camera slung over your back and 2 flashlights in your caropants is no easy task. We hide behind pallets and wait for them to pass. The saw dust really started to irritate my throat and eyes.
Make that close call #1.
We climb the ladder and made it onto the roof and we survey the land around us checking for any activity. A kind cool breeze was at our backs and we climbed another ladder onto an even higher roof and we sat up there and enjoyed the view with a fat blunt.
15 second exposure of a small plant growing on the roof. The wind blew it around thus giving it the blur.
Here’s the ladder we climbed up to get onto the other roof
I don’t trust that ladder at ALL we’re lucky it didn’t fall on us.
Me smoking a cigarette.
My friend
The smokestack
On the roof
After that we climbed down the ladder that we climbed up
We explored some more and came to this part of the factory and found a water cooler
So we decided to leave. As we were walking out of the corner of our eye we see a fucking security guard. How he didn’t see us I don’t know. How he didn’t hear us skid to a halt on the dirt/stone ground and walk away all fast like I don’t know. My friend goes back inside the building and I hide behind a bobcat. At this point I think we’re fucked, I mean really how could he have NOT seen or heard us? He shines his flashlight on the building near where he heard us but thats all he did, he didn’t investigate. We hear him on his walkie talkie and he heads over to where we were spotted on one of our drunken attempts at exploring this place (story later in the egg)
My friend whispers to me and we meet up and just run across the open area and climb the fence and we walk down the trail. We’re halfway down the trail when we hear what sounds like footsteps in the thick brush to the left of us. We both shine our lights on the spot and didn’t see shit. Could have been an animal but it sounded like footsteps trying to traverse the thick brush.
Make that close call #2
We make it back to his house and play some cards and watch some television.
The green dot is where we smoked the blunt, the red is about where we were when we seen the security guard and ran and the yellow is where he shined his flashlight after we both went into hiding.
-----
We awake that morning and roll up another blunt and smoke it on "The Cliff" and we again climb the fence and go back to exploring. We stop, look and listen and see/hear nothing and continue on our merry way.
The big red warehouse
Thats the bobcat I was hiding behind. Felt like Solid fucking Snake, too bad I don’t have Nanotechnology.
We enter the factory again and begin our exploration. My friend finds a ladder and we climb it seeing a vast structure above our heads. Since they decided to cut some of the platforms away that lead to all the cool stuff we had to climb some shit to get where we wanted to go.
Pipes going every direction, valves left and right and MORE above our heads. I stop to take photos and my friend explores the stuff above me.
My personal fave. shot from that day:
Back on the roof where we smoked some roaches
Anyway yeah. I go and check out where my friend went and it was pimp as shit.
Looooong drop.
Watch it ^A video of my friend dropping a 50 lbs socket thing down the thing. You should of heard the WHOOOOOOOOOOSH it made as it fell.
Yeah and then we checked out the empty offices which were last used in 2003.
The lights still worked too
Where we found some nasty ass cheetos
While we were in the office section we seen this dude with his 2 little kids walking on the property, probably just showing them where he works and such.
Taken in the break area for the workers
After that we made our exit and stood outside the door just talking. Since it was Sunday we assumed the place was inactive. I guess it is, but a fucking white SUV rolls around the corner when we’re like halfway to our entry/exit point. We just ran and jumped the fence and kept running.
Close call #3
In total I’ve been to this factory a lot, I’ve explored it a lot.
-----
Drinking tends to lower your inhibitions, and it certainly did for us. With most people they don’t know what they’re doing is a bad idea, us, on the other hand did and did it anyway because we were bored.
We down 3 deuces and get a little drunk and decided to hit up the factory again. It was active, we heard the machinery and did it anyway. We sneak around and get to where we need to make our accent up to the roof. I’m halfway up the ladder and some dude peaks his head in through the garage door and just stares directly at me. He didn’t see my friend but he seen me. He goes out the garage and pokes his head back in. At this point we just ran. Running drunk just straight up sucks but we weren’t in the mood to stop for tea.
But yeah, this is part 3 of the factory that I’ve gone to a lot.
Thanks for reading. Sorry if it seems substandard.
Sep 02, 2007 1:28 am - nice egg man, your have AWSOME photography skills, the way you get things to look in the pictures in mad. definet 5 from me! Great egg. =)
Good Job, I really liked the look of the shots from inside the structuraly unsound parking garage... they were great apart from a couple being a little uneven. I hardly ever drag my tripod around...
Aug 17, 2009 5:05 pm - This is gorgeous. Really great moody/colorful photographs, it DOESN’T make me want to go there, but I’m glad you were brave enough to do it. :)
