I did not know where else to put this, and I know the majority of you know, but I feel it is only right to keep spreading the word. TCPA[refer to the title]is Microsoft and Intel and over 100 other companies trying to put a Fritz chip[named for Senator Fritz Hollings of South Carolina, who is working like hell to make this thing legal.], or monitoring device, in every single electronics device sold in the United States. The pretend reason for this to ha#*@! to stop pirated software, but it will do so much more. Whenever you are online, a hotlist of bad files will be uploaded to this chip, and whoever has access to this hotlist will have a lot of power.
So we know why companies will stand to benefit. It will comletely wipe out freelance programmers, because all programs would have to be accepted on the "trusted list". That means bye-bye shareware. The fritz chip will automatically delete any files that are pirated, and not only that, but any files created from a non-tcpa computer will not be viewable to anyone with a pro-tcpa computer.
How does the government stand to benefit? An excellent possibility in TCPA and Palladium[see the next paragraph] is that any company or agency can make files on their computer born classified, or only viewable on company computers. That means that no incriminating information can be leaked electronically to journalists or the FBI. Yes, I guess that would come in handy for the mafia too, though.
So why don’t we just not buy TCPA computers? I mean, if someone is stupid enough to buy one, then they don’t deserve to look at our files anyway, right? Sure. But Palladium is what prevents that from happening. Not only is our lovely Senator Hollings trying to make ALL electronics tcpa-certified, but Palladium is basically the same as tcpa, only with software instead. So every new download after the possible passing of this bill will keep you from reading any files that are "untrusted."
Similiar bills are on the table in the UK and other countries. But think about the rest of the world for a second. Say it passes in the US, but not in Canada or UK. That means that nothing in the US will be viewable in the UK, and nothing in the UK will be visible in the US.
Can’t you break the #*@!in fritz chip??? In the first computer that would come out, it will probably be kind of easy. After that, it will be buried in the processor. Although it will still be possible, it’s likely to keep getting harder and harder. PLus, it would be illegal to tamper with it, so if you screw with it and can’t fix it, you can’t ever get online again unless you want three years in jail.
For a much better explanation than mine, go to www.againsttcpa.com and read Ross Anderson’s FAQ. Damn Fritz Hollings and Bill Gates anyway.
