Seeing as how UER.ca’s registration email isn’t working, I can’t register there. I need a place to post a few of my recent Urban Explorations, so I figured I’d stop in and see what you guys thought of them.
The Regency Mall is an abandoned mall in Augusta, GA. Due to poor location, and competition from the more popular Augusta Mall, the Regency mall lost all of its anchor stores, and eventually closed completely in 2002.
I pick Peter up at his house, and we head down Jefferson Davis highway, a familiar course, being the same we took to the Clearwater Finishing Plant. This time, however, we pass the plant, and continue towards the SC/GA border. After crossing into Georgia, we turn into the parking lot for the old Regency Mall, then park in the connecting lot belonging to a church facility. After being greeted by a rent-a-cop in front of one of the buildings, we carefully make our way back through the parking lot to the mall.
We circle part of the building searching for a way inside of it. We begin taking the screws out of a door hinge nearby, only to realize its bolted down. We continue around the mall until we reach Mall Entrance 2. The doors are completely boarded up, and after some handy work by Peter using a multi-tool, he manages to rip one of the pieces of particle from the lock it’s connected to. After some tugging, and a few heavy kicks from Peter, the inside board gives way. Luckily, the window on the other side happened to be one of the broken ones, so we manage to squeeze through and enter the mall.
We head across the open area in front of us towards the escalator, and move up to the second story of what we later find out to have once been a Belk.
We exit the Belk via a broken window, as a good portion of the mall is blocked off with glass windows and gates, and traverse the upper levels.
After a quick glance around, we decide there isn’t really much to see. As we continue, we spot the employees only hallway which contains the management offices and back entrances to stores. Obviously, we decide to check it out.
After walking around and finding nothing but locked doors, we spot a door with no knob. Upon further inspection, it turns out to be the back entrance to what was once a Lens Crafters.
We decide we’ve seen about all the mall has to offer, so we decide to find an easy exit. After following one of the many exit signs up a few flights of stairs, we find our destination chained off.
After circling around the back office maze for a short while, we make our way back to where we came in, and decide to retrace our way back to the Belk from which we came in. I spot a fat girl store, and feel the urge to take a picture.
After one last look around, we crawl back through the broken window from which we entered.
Unrelated Note:
On the way home, we spot about 20 police cars, sirens blazing, in the direction we came. Peter suggests they’re preparing a road block, completely unrelated to our escapade. We were previously called on our way to the mall and asked to come to some dude’s party, so we decide to blow the remaining few hours there. As we head back into Aiken, SC, we end up stopped behind a long line of cars, in front of multiple police. At this point, I’m scared as hell, seeing as how we have two knives, a camera full of images proving we committed a felony, and to top it all off, Peter’s driving without his license. We pull a quick seat switch and then realize its a car crash, and turn around. Anti-climactic, I know, but it scared the piss out of me. |

 | Sep 09, 2007 9:37 am - That’s a pretty cool place to have by you. This is the first time I’ve heard of an abandoned mall. 5*
Excuse the question if it’s been answered before (I’m oblivious to a lot that goes on, on RE) but I thought you left? |
