Ok, this egg is on how to make a mortar shell. It does not have a loud burst, if you can even here the burst. It is more just for the sheer beauty of it. So, if your looking for a loud salute, this isn’t the guide.
What you will need!
-Some stars. (I am using Tigertail stars[cut, and a few rolled])
-Fuse (I am using purple falling leaf)
-two soda bottle caps
-a drill bit the size of your fuse
-a bit of black powder, greenmix works fine
-hot glue
Now, first thing. Take a bottle cap and drill the hole the size of your fuse, in the middle
Now take the OTHER bottle cap and fill it with the stars (I am using some cut stars, a few rolled. Fill it to the top)
Now sprinkle some of the powder on it
measure your length of fuse. You want it to be barely out of the cap (you can measure by putting the two caps ontop of eachother and then putting the fuse through. Once it touches the bottom...measure)
Cut it at a 45 degree angle USE A HOBBY KNIFE!
Put the two caps on eachother. Now this is how long you want the fuse to be. If you want it shorter or longer, cut it to length
Hot glue the fuse in place
now take the top cap, and put hot glue where i did
Now press it onto the other cap. So they are like one. and its your finished shell!
[b]Now for a better break you can tape it in a few layers of electrical tape. I didn’t because I couldn’t find mine.
How to launch!
Weigh out it...use about 1/10 of lift as the shell weighs. So...say it weighs 20g, use about 2g of lift. Although I would use 3-4 to be safe. Now put it in fuse side first into the mortar, fuse the mortar...and your shell will be in the air =D
Oct 01, 2007 5:42 pm - Fuse has to be at the 45 degree angle so it ignites easier while in the air. The fuse has to be short because the shell will go up...come back down THEN hit the comp. When its short, it gets the perfect time to reach the climax.
Oct 02, 2007 10:02 am - I used to make these, but i would use small thin cardboard tubes i rolled and dried over night. Way more efficient that way, i dont drink much soda bottles.
