Welcome to another one of my guides, this guide will not be a part of the first addition of the MHB but will be included in the second addition. It is a basic guide on making a 2” shell using a quite minimal amount of pyro materials, for example the shell is made from 2 cardboard disks and a toilet roll.
First off begin by using up a toilet roll (this is probably the hardest part), if you cannot figure out how to use up toilet roll then look on Google for a book called “Don’t bother reading any of my instructional guides again”.
Next cut the roll down to size, I normally cut it down to about 2” with 1” added on, the extra inch is for the flaps to be folded down- don’t understand? Keep reading,.
Next take the roll and place it on a piece of cardboard, I use some stiff cardboard that was taken from a packaging box. You shouldn’t really use corrugated cardboard because of it’s tendency to fold.
Cut them out as evenly as possible.
The next part is to make small incisions on both sides of the cardboard so you are able to fold it over, these small incisions are made with a pair of scissors and go down about ½” deep, as you can see the tube now looks like it’s be “castled”.
Place one of the cardboard disks in, if it fails to fit in then simply trim a millimetre off and try again- repeat until it slips in but stays in place.
Next fold over the tabs and secure it in place, you can either do this using hot glue or tape, I use tape because I personally do not like using hot glue unless it is absolutely necessary.
Drill a hole inside the disk and insert a short length of fuse, I used 1/16” Chinese Visco, because I’m going to mount this shell on top of a rocket it means the length doesn’t really matter- always use excess so you can trim it down when attaching it to the top of a rocket. Hot glue/glue in place.
You now need a thin tube for the burst charge, I simply rolled a small piece of paper around a 12mm dowel and taped it up with fibre glass tape and tape. Nothing fancy here, it’s just used to hold the burst charge.
Hot glue the tube in the middle, ensure the fuse is on the inside of the tube.
You now need a burst charge, if you are able to make it then you can use fast black powder, what I’m using is coarse benzolift- benzolift is a mixture of whistle mix and green mix and a good article can be found be googling it. It burns fast and hot making it perfect for breaking shells. Some people like to use flash but you would need to use only a small amount because it may just shatter the stars into dust.
Fill the tube in the middle with benzolift and stuff a small wad of tissue inside the tube just to keep the benzolift from falling out the tube.
Next you need stars, I’m using cut Greenmix stars with 25% metal added, I’m also using granite stars rolled in prime:
Fill around the tube with your stars, make sure it doesn’t reach too over the top of your tube.
What I do to assist the break and help ignite the stars is to fill the voids with BP coated grass seed, this isn’t necessary but I do it anyway.
Place the other disk on top on tape it/hot glue it down.

Next paste 2 layers of paper evenly around the shell:
Now the next step is spiking, you can either use string or fibre glass tape, I used a special type of tape which is basically a sticky mesh, works fine.
Now wrap it in a few more layers (bout 6 depending on the paper) and let it dry.
You are done, you have successfully made a shell, what I like to do is mount it on a rocket, there is a video but it’s really poor because I used a phone camera and the rocket flew away quite a distance. Nevertheless you can see that it does work, thanks for reading.

Of course it could do minor damage...But thats why we only want sensible people to try these things.
