you will see from the cutting list that the roof supports and post are made of timber of the same dimensions. select a lenth of wood that is straight grained and as free from large loose knots. cut the main upright post to lenths.
2
it is always a good idea to shape off the feet ends as it makes the finished table look so much more elagent. no joints are necceserry to fix them to the post simply glue and swrew them on.
the table
1
the table is secured to the top of the post by the 2 support battens which are screwed to the table top first. check that the post will fit snugly between the battens then bore holes in the table top to take the screws. now glue and screw the battens to the underside of the table ensuring that they extend beyond the table top equally on both ends.
the roof
1
the roof is held above the table by 2 upwright lenths of timber. these are glued and screwed into the ends of the table support battens. chech that the uprights are at 90 degrees to the table top.
2
make a cardboard template of the triangle ends of the roof.
3
using the card template mark out 2 triangles on the timber and also mark in the centre line on the timber, and the positions of the holes you will need to bore for the screws to secure the roof to the uprights. clamp the timber to the bench then cut out the triangles using the jet cut saw. once both roof ends are cut out use a surfrom tool to remove any saw marks.
4
mark out the correct positions for the screws to hold the shiplap boards to the triangular roof ends. it is simplest to put all the shiplap boards together and mark them all out together, using a rule and a long straight edge.
5
now drill the shiplap to take the screws. the screws nearest the bottem edges of the shiplap need to be drivin in very carefully, otherwise they may split the lower edges of the roof triangles, which are quite a narrow angle. it is worthwhile boring small pilot holes in the triangles to accomidate the bottem screws. holding the ends in place and fixing the shiplap really reqiers the help of another person.
6
the roof is finished off with a betten to the apex, attached with glue and screws. you can make this as simple or as complicated as you wish. i used a jigsaw and a surform tool to cut out and shape up the batten for the top of my bird table and then i bored a couple of big holes at the ends just for a final effect.
assembly
1
to prevent the wind blowing the birdseed off the table screw and glue short stips of timer along the sides.
2
to fit the table to the roof it is a good idea to have an assistant the two upwright roof supports from the table should fit flush on the inside of the 2 triangular roof ends.
position the upwrights and ends and with your helper holding things together drive a screw through an end piece and into an upright. to begin with fix only one screw at each end check that all is well and fits neatly before you drive in the rest.
3
now fir the post to the top of thetable and the table supports battes beneath and secure with screws and a drop of glue.
finishing
cover it with the wood care treatmeat with arount 5 coats.

Oct 11, 2007 6:24 pm - I hate how Good eggs with alot of work in them get 0s because its not about bombs, drugs, theft, exploration or weapons. Most eggs on topics that aren’t illegal or touch on issues that make this site seem like a bunch of pussys because it doesn’t involve some form of crime or something that could be used for a crime. I appreciate eggs like this because I had an egg on how to make money by growing peppers (hours of work) and it got downvoted.
