Ok i am back to my 1day=1egg schedule. But only so long as i have things to write eggs about (not a problem).

The topic of today’s egg is Wheels and Tires. Alot of people think they understand them but do they really? Im sure you thought you would never need algebra again in your life but not if you want to maximize the potential out of your suspension.

Heres What Sucksabout choosing wheels and tires...
Wheels are measured standard (15 inches by 8 inches) or (14"x7").Picking out the wheels can be easy if you are used to the way people do things in the USA.
Tires are not only measured metric, but they also include a stupid fraction/percentage in the numbers.
The width of the tire at the bead seal is measured in millimeters (185, 195, 205...). There is also a percentage of tire profile (height) to the width of the tire (45,50,70).

WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN?
For street driving, you need to maximize traction, water dispersal (for driving in rain), and control. You dont want a tire so wide and fat that it serves no purpose on a small economy car as it will not need so much traction for everyday driving. Having bigger, heavier and wider tires on a lightweight car will reduce fuel economy because of the extra resistance that the tire has with the asphalt. You also do not want a small wimpy tire meant for a ford festiva on a chevy suburban (for durability and control reasons).

When reading tire indicator stamp on the side of a tire, there are alot of markings that are important.
A tire that says P-185-60-R14 may sound like the name of some dangerous german dildo but it is the whole blueprint of a car tire. The P indicates that it is a passenger tire meant for a passenger vehicle with no serious weight load. The 185 is the width of the tire in millimeters at the beadseal on the rim. The 60 is the aspect ratio of the percentage of the tire height (profile) to the tire width. The letter R indicates that it is a radial tire and it is meant for a 14 inch rim. This tire would be great for a small car like a Volkswagen or Honda but not on an escalade.

If you use a tire that has a large aspect ratio (70% or higher) than your ride will be very smooth and the tire will absorb the road better. Using a low profile tire (less than 45%) will give great traction, little or no absorption of bumps, great cornering and better control.

low profile tires:

"high" profile tires:

There are many types of tires. There are radials, bias belted, bias ply, drag radials and more. Radials have strips of reinforcement metal, kevlar or carbon spanning out from the center of the tire around to the other side across the tread. Bias ply tires will have a woven sheet of metal strips, kevlar, fiberglass or thin carbon circling around the tire as a structural component. Bias belted will have wide metal belts circling around the tire and are often seen when a big 18-wheeler blows out a tire. Drag radials are basically just tires meant to be heated up that wont warp or distort in extreme g-force conditions so therefore they are designed as radial tires.

Many people adjust their suspension without making adjustments to their tires. There are different tires meant for different speed ratings but H-rated tires are usually good enough for high speeds and weight loads. Lowering your suspension can be catastrophic if the tires arent changed. Sure, you can drop the car 2 inches with the wheels turned straight, but what happens when you turn the wheel? Your tire rubs the wheelwell. There are a few ways to solve this. Wheelspacers can be used to give better clearance in certain directions, rolling your fenders (OH BOY) can be done, or stretching your tires.

Stretching your tires involves using a tire that is 1 or 2 steps wider than the rim it is being mounted to. IF the tire you have now is a P205-60-R15, you can use a P185-60-R15 and the tire will "bend" around the edges so that it fits into your wheelwell better. This gives cornering advantages because the tire holds its sidewall strength around corners and minimal camber adjustment is needed to get the best handling.

Stretched tire:

I personally think that Hankook has the best tire models. Of course, if you read MODIFIED magazine, they show pictures of asian chicks, but if you read eurotuner, they show pictures of wierd german and swedish chicks.

IF you cant understand tires yet and dont understand what they do or how they affect your car’s performance, check out this picture...

You may not think that having good tires is important, but you need all of the extra handling and control you can get out of your car. You never know when a flaming dude on a wheelchair could run into a DO NOT ENTER zone.

its especially scary, when its a wheelchair like this...

That lady in the blue has H-rated low profile tires, shes gonna win...

If that lady with the frostbitten feet, would just cut off her legs, than the reduction in wind resistance would give her an aerodynamics advantage.

4* only because Opera is tossing the 5* buttons salad at the moment.

Where the hell did you get the wheelchair race pic?

wrong, the one at the very left already has her aerodynamical advantage without having the time penalty to have to cut off her legs, hence.. i reakon she will probably win.

i meant to say that stretching the tire involves mounting a tire 1 or 2 steps NARROWER... not wider

i added in all of the wheelchair shit to cover the fact that learning about tires is SOOO FUCKING BORING. But it is necessary. Because when you go to pepboys and the retard there tells you to use pirellis that cost $80 each and are meant for a 205-50-r16 rim and you dont realize that your rim is a 185-16 rim youll be pissed when it looks like a big stupid black bubble attached to your wheels. I prefer to stretch medium-profiled tires rather than use a wide low-profile tire because of the tireshape but also because of the price. A standard tire is like $40 and can be stretched to act like a low profile tire, buying low profile tires that look sleek are like $70-$120 each.

5 stars, this is practical: 6 months ago, I went to get a spare for my mustang, and I decided to get new tires altogether. They talked me into getting different tires than my firestone white-walls, and they put fucking monster truck looking things on them! I said give me my fucking white-walls back!
