Alright, in this egg I will show you how to construct a simple device to conduct a diamagnetic levitation experiment.

What does "diamagnetic" mean?
It means anything that OPPOSES a magnetic force.

Shall we begin?

Okay first we will build the structure needed for this experiment.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
Power drill

1"x4"x10" board
1½"x1½"x10" board
1’ long ½" wooden rod
2’4" long 7/8" PVC pipe

1 Fence tie
7/8" drill bit
5/8" drill bit (put the ½ bit there by mistake)
1/8" drill bit
1 Short, wide headed, galvanized nail

Grab your 1"x4"x10", Drill, and 7/8" drill bit.

Drill two 6/8" holes in both sides 1" from the ends.

See if your PVC fits well into the holes.

Cut the PVC in two 1’2" sections...

So far you should have something like this.

Get your 1½"x1½"x10" and mark the spots where you’ll drill matching it up with the 1"x4"’s holes.

Drill the two 6/8" deep holes.

You should now have something like this.

Get your 5/8" drill bit and drill.

Now drill A hole dead center in your 1½"x1½".

You should be able to put the wooden rod straight through the hole you just drilled.

Take the wooden rod out, get your nail, and grab a hammer.

Hammer the nail through the center of the rod being careful not to split it.

Get your 1/8" drill bit and drill... I decided to use a smaller drill for this part.

Drill 12 holes, ½" apart, through the OPPOSITE side of the rod that has the nail in it.

Your fence tie should slide right through it.

Slide the rod back through the hole with the nail facing down.
Your finished with this part! You should have something similar to this...

Alright, you’ve made the structure for the experiment...now we need to get to the technical stuff.

ITEMS NEEDED:
Propane burner or stove.

4 ounces of Bismuth.

The bottom of an Aluminum can.

I used some needle nose pliers to make it easier to direct liquid from the can.

One of those small candle containers... just remove the wax and wick.

Tongs

Okay if you are using a stove skip the next step.
Turn your burner on high and with the tongs hold the Aluminum can over the flame to get rid of that lining inside of it.

Now put HALF of your bismuth in the can and put it on the burner/ stove.

Bismuths melting point is only 271 degrees C...
Leads melting point is 327 degrees C. So that should give you an idea of how fast it will melt.
So when your bismuth is melted CAREFULLY use your tongs to pull the can off of the burner.

Now using your tongs carefully pour the liquid Bismuth into the small candle dish.

Spray some water on the ground next to the dish to cool the Bismuth... once it is cool enough lightly spray the Bismuth itself until it has hardened.

Rip the container off and you’ll be left with this round slab of Bismuth.

Repeat those steps with the other half of your Bismuth and you’ll have two...

Now in this last section you will need a few more items.

ITEMS NEEDED:
About 10 pennies

¾"x1½" Neodyminum magnet (Disc)

3/16" Neodyminum magnet (Cube)

This is Everything you need to conduct the experiment.

Simply put the ¾"x1½" disc magnet on the side of the wooded rod with nail in it.

Now put two stacks of 5-6 pennies on top of one Bismuth slab, put the cube magnet in the center and put the other Bismuth slab on top.

Put this on the board directly under the disc magnet.

Now play with the adjustment on your wooded rod until...

☺

If you closely followed my instructions then you should have a nifty little floating magnet...

How does this work? The Bismuth is diamagnetic, meaning it opposes magnetic force... It is in fact the most diamagnetic metal there is. The bottom Bismuth slab helps by slightly pushing against the small magnet, the larger "lifter magnet" pulls the smaller one closer, while the top Bismuth slab keeps it from touching it because of its natural diamagnetic force. So you are left with a levitating magnet! =D

If you can’t tell I put ALOT of effort into this egg so consider that before you vote.

Awesome... 5*
I am envious of your large, manly magnet...
One warning, though... Keep the small magnet from slamming into the big one, or it may shatter...

yeah dude I already fucked up a ½ by 1" cylinder magnet from that...it’s strong as fuck...supposively it’s "borderline super-magnet"

Btw, you can also get bismuth at gun shops and sporting goods stores. Bismuth is used as a non-toxic replacement for lead shot, for reloading shotgun shells, and such, and for fishing sinkers.

I know aluminum is dimagnetic to a lesser extent than bismuth, but do you know if it’d be enough?

ShadyGrey

I’m not quite sure diddyu... it’s worth the try though. Let me know if it works or not.
