Ok hey guys I am going tot show you how to shave some weight from your bike and how to adjust mechanical disk brakes. Also don’t say “wow you shave like 1 pound”, why do you think swimmers shave their legs? The same thing applies here for people wanting to race. This egg is for my new Mountain Bikers group found here http://www.rotteneggs.com/r3/show/se/338692.html join it if your into bikes. Also this egg is completely my own work so if the egg points go to the group some profile rating would be nice. So anyways lets start.
Here is a picture of bike.
So well start off with the handle bar grip ends. You don’t need them unless you toss your bike into the ground so cut these off.
If you have shifter covers simply unscrew the restraining screws and pop it off.
It should end up like this. In my opinion it looks better
Now we have the tube caps, I have metal ones so this actually shaves a few grams. These are really not needed as they barely do anything.
If you still have the reflectors on your pedals pry them off with a screwdriver because if your concerned about riding at night you should have some lights not crappy reflectors.
On all the cables ends should have metal guards. Pull them off and replace them with a small piece of duct tape to prevent fraying.
Take off your seat post and mark where you leave it when you put it in the hole. This only works if you keep it at the same height all the time. So mark that spot then look at the line cut into your frame like this. Measure the line and add that to the mark on your seat post. Now cut at this mark to remove a significant amount a weight. The reason you added an inch is because the seat post clamp need a part to clamp onto.
See the little rubber spacers, cut them off they never act as wanted so there useless.
If you have v brake mounts on your fork remove the caps for the v brakes.
Remove the reflectors off your wheels again if your concerned about riding at night you should have some lights not crappy reflectors.
Alright that’s the end of the weight shaving part and I know there are many other ways to shave weight those are just most of the ways I know without buying anything.
Now I am going to show you how to tune your disk brakes.
So you will need to take the matching size allen key and turn the bolt thing counter clockwise until the brake cable can move freely.
Now pull the cable through so there is no resistance anymore.
Ok so now keep spinning your wheel and squeezing the brake calipers until you hear your disc begin to hit the brake pad. Now most peoples disc are bent as are mine so you need to find your own balance between rubbing and power. Once you’ve found this balance tighten the cable back up being careful not to let it slip back loose.
Ok so that’s it I hope you like this egg and join my group. Enjoy.
Nov 06, 2007 5:32 pm - Great egg. 5*****’s all the way. I ride BMX, and I know how serious weight saving can be, I have almost 1700 invested in my bike (down to 20lbs flat!), ti spindle and axles, folding tires, ti spokes, pivotal seat, etc. so I see where your coming from. I would say this though, keep the little metal knarps (the things on the end of the cable) only weigh .5 grams so I see the effectiveness and appearance of them to be worth the .2 grams you could save. Lol, I’m a "Weight Weenie"
Nov 07, 2007 5:54 am - You really should keep the tube caps on. They keep out dirt and debris that will eventually make your tires leak. You’ll end up having to get new inner tubes a lot. Sweet bike, though.
No 10, 2007 2:50 pm - You’ve got to be shitting me. If you want to ’shave weight’, just simply don’t drink that bottle of water before you go, or don’t eat that hot dog. Those weight losses are extremely insignificant.
