The duffy Lake caves are some of the neatest oldest mining caves i have ever been in. The Duffy lake road is situated in the coastal mountain range in southern BC. The road lies between the towns of Pemberton and Lillooet.
The area is part of the gold rush trail and all along the road you can find many diffent old mining sites, camps, entrances and cave-ins. My cousin and I hike there lots. We have found the old telegraph pole line, WITH some of the old insulaters.(if you go there please leave the insulators)
We found a old rest stop or camp. There were broken chinese style dishes and a couple old utensils, jars and other NEAT stuff. The site was mostly covered by an old avalanche, id love to see whats underneath all that rock.

The caves in this steep deep valley are hard to get to sometimes but the view is worth it. There is one cave entrace where you shimmy across a 6 inch ledge for 6 meters, and its about 1000 or more feet down. It does have a cable there to hold onto while crossing but it still makes your knees wobble. This cave has many branches to follow, and many more shafts. BE careful here, the mines wooden structures are ALL rotten. I have never gone down the shafts here but it is possible because these caves are high enough not to get flooded like some of the lower ones.

Another set of caves, which are closer to the road, can be found just before the second bridge into Lillooet. These go for a couple hundred feet in many directions and branches.
The lower entrance is acsesible by foot, but its shafts are flooded ussually. The upper entrance
is a 30 shaft into the upper levels of the cave below. I use yellow rope, not safe but its practical and cheap. The top entrance has small trickles of water flowing around it. inside the cave it sparkles with quartz, calcium and minerals are forming small stalagmites and stalagtites.
if you go down the firstshaft you come to it will take you to the middle level about 20 feet down again. This also has two branching tunnels, both are blocked at about 60 feet in two large shafts that i have never gone down.

There are many more caves here. When you come up here for the 2010 olympics remember to check out the caves on the duffy lake road. Its only a two hours drive from Whistler.
