Old Indian tricks

If get lost while hiking and don’t have a lighter or matches you can still start a fire quickly.
This tecknique relies on friction to start a fire but it is alot eaiser and faster than rubbing two sticks together by hand.
All you need to do is find:

- 1 dry stick, about 1/2" diameter by 1 foot long
- 1 green sappling about 3" long
- 1 piece wood that is flat on one side and is wide and log if possible.
- a sharp pointed rock
- 1 of your shoelaces (This won’t work with velcro stupid!)
- 1 piece bark
- very dry shavings or grass.

-Take the rock and drill it into the edge of the dry flat wood. Make the hole about as wide as the dry stick is. cut a small notch in the side of the wood so the hole now looks like pac-man.*

-Take the sappling and slowly bend it into a bow shape and tie the sholace to either end.*

-carve the end of the 1/2 stick to a point. The point is the bottom of it.*

Now take the 1/2" stick and the lace-bow and wrap the lace once around the top of the stick so it is held loosley. You should be able to lift the bow level and the stick should hang down by itself from the lace. Now fit the stick into the hole you drilled and take the small peice of bark and place it on top ot the stick. You must push down lightly on the stick for it to remain in place while the stick is spinning. If you grab the bow you should be able to push and pull it horizontily, therefore spinning the stick. Try to find the right pressures and tecknique that suits your bowing and get that stick spinning in the hole as fast as you can. Once the hole starts to smoke just keep going. Have the grass or shavings near the notch and slowly embers will fall out the notch and into the grass or shavings. This is your fire starter.

I will post some diagrams soon to illustrate these points.
