I know there have been a few computer maintenance eggs on Re but i thout i would make one with pics, and 1 that covers the basics.
==Defrag==
I know many of yous know about the windows xp disk defrag feature, but, i don’t seem to notice much of a difference when its finished defraging. I notice that it could have done better, and so heres a program (jkdefrag) that dose out perform the windows xp disk defrager (im shore many of yous have already used disk defrag, but keep in mind. this is mainly aimed at noobs)
and download the version that best suits you best. If your running a 32bit system you would click on the first one, if your running a 64bit + system click on the second one. If your not shore, just click on the first one
Ok once that you have finished downloading it and un-ziped it (right click, extract), open the file and you will find a buncha files like this.
click on the one that says "jkdefrag.exe
A new window will pop up, and start defraging. just let it run until its finished ( useualy takes about 20 min, depending on your hard drive size and your computer
==Virtual Memory==
Phil told me this over msn one time.
you ever get them bubbles that say "warning: virtual memory low" ? and wonted to know how to fix ?
ok, go into your control panel and open up system.
Click on the top tab that says advanced. and then click on performance settings.
In the new window that just poped up. Click on the top tab that says advanced. and then at the bottom of the window click "change"
Now, adjust your virtual memory to around about the same as mine (more or less is fine)
i tent to have my initual size at 1gig (1000mb)
and my max size at 1344mb
After its finished downloading. and youv installed it. just run the desktop icon called ccleaner
and it should open.
tick/untick stuff you dont wont to be cleared (such as fire fox cache and ie, up to you.)
and just hit the run cleaner button =)
==Registry==
Registry is one of the key contributers to slugish computers. Here is how to tune it and clean it up.
Dont try and be l33t and start deleting/changing shit from yoru registry. it ushaly results in having to format c://
so what we need to clean up the registry is Registry Mechanic. You can download it HERE(http://www.mininova.org/tor/883399)
with crack.
Once youv finished downloading and have installed it. Open the shortcut to it on your desktop
. click on the first one "scan your registry"
let it do its thing, should take about 5 - 10 min. (take me about 3min)
When the scan is compleat, it will come up with a hole list of registry faults and errors. make shore they are all ticked and then click repair.
Once youv done it all, Restart your computer. Notice a change in your boot up time ? notice less error messages, notice it takes a lot les time to open windows?
Enjoy!
For everyone who already knows this, keep in mind i made this for noobs
Nov 11, 2007 10:18 am - pretty good. it might be a good idea to clean out your shit before you defrag. CrapCleaner has a registry cleaner in it, but i like registry mechanic better for xp. and don’t think about firefox, get Opera, best browser by far. 4*
Nov 11, 2007 12:25 pm - thanks everyone, and im not shore about the ddl’s dont think regestry has anything to do with it. you should try re-instaling windws ontop of istsel (no need to re format)
Nov 20, 2007 1:37 am - pretty good 4. but i would warn people about using the registry thing. it can really mess up ur computer or programs. its happened to me before...
Nov 29, 2007 5:50 am - kl egg came at the right time to my laptops been running super slow are do this and let u know.. sweet.. 5* although the registry link has problems with its servers?
