I enjoy Guitar Hero, but I am not always happy with the playlists that are included. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. So this egg is going to teach you how to add custom songs to Guitar Hero II for the PS2 (I know that is the outdated version, but it is way too complicated on the new game. Besides, the only real difference is the graphics.)
I am using the song MEANT TO LIVE by SWITCHFOOT. There are a few problems with this song so that is why I picked it. It will help me to show how to solve a few common problems. Other songs can be added in the same way as I will show you here.
1.) An MP3 or WMA version of the song. This can be found on limewire, bearshare, or wherever you download songs from
1.)Download all the programs and files above and install them. Put them all in a similar location to make them easy to access.
2.)Put the Guitar Hero II disk into the DVD drive of your computer. Right click on your DVD drive and copy the whole disk. Paste this somewhere you will remember.
3.)Open GUITAR HERO EXPLORER
4.)Go to FILE--> ARCHIVE-->ADD
5.)Click on the folder where you copied the Guitar Hero II disk. Search the folder for another folder called GEN. Search that folder for a file called MAIN.HDR. Click on that.
6.)A window will pop up asking if you want to verify the file. Click YES.
7.)Now on the left side of the screen will be all the files contained in MAIN.HDR. Click on the + beside SONGS.
8.)This is all the songs that are on the game. Click on the song you want to overwrite. For this example I am using the first one: ARTERIAL BLACK. Click on the + beside it.
9.)Right click on ARTERIALBLACK.MID and select REPLACE. Search for the MEANTTOLIVE.CHART file I told you to download. This version of the chart file only has EASY, MEDIUM, and HARD difficulties. Since there is no EXPERT mode, you can either leave it blank, or click on the drop-down box and select one of the other difficulties. I would recommend doing this and choosing the HARD mode chart. This goes for the RHYTHM and CO-OP rows as well. You can leave them blank, but I would recommend filling them all in. Click OK when you have done this. You then have to wait for all the files to be written and properly placed. This can take a few minutes.
10.) After this is done, Right click on ARTERIALBLACK_SP.VGS. Select IMPORT. Right click somewhere in the white box of this new window and select ADD. Search for the SWITCHFOOT MEANT TO LIVE music file you downloaded. On the bottom half of this window click on the drop-down window by 0. Select #0 CHANNEL 0 (LEFT). Then click on 1. Select #0 CHANNEL 1 (RIGHT). After that, click OK. You will again have to wait for the files to be written and placed.
11.) This is the hardest part of the whole process right here. You need to be sure the music syncs up with the notes. To do this, click on the ARTERIALBLACK folder(by the + you clicked in step 8). Click the PLAY arrow and watch the scroll bar to see if it passes the notes as you hear them being played. For this song, I know it will not match up. What you have to do is go back to ARTERIALBLACK_SP.VGS and click IMPORT again. Right click in the white box again and select ADD. Select the same song you used last time. Now right click on that file and select PROPERTIES. You now have to set the offset for the music. This is mostly just guess-work and trial-and-error. In the OFFSET(MS) box, type in either how much sooner/later to start the music. If the music is too early, the number will be negative, if the music is too late, the number will be positive. You can try to figure the offset out by yourself to get an idea of how this works or you can just use the number I give you. The number I use is -450. When you have entered the number, click OK.
12.) This step is not always necessary, but it is for this example. The ARTERIALBLACK folder contains a file called ARTERIALBLACK_COOP.VGS. This means that the coop version of the song has a different track and so it must also be replaced. You do the exact same stuff as in step 10 but with ARTERIALBLACK_COOP.VGS instead of ARTERIALBLACK_SP.VGS. Don’t forget to set the offset again. The good thing is that, once you figure it out for the ARTERIALBLACK_SP.VGS, you can use the same offset for this file.
13.) The song and notes are now changed, so now I will teach you how to change the name of the song in the game. This is not necessary, but makes it easier to find your custom songs within the game. Click the – by the ARTERIALBLACK folder and then click the – by the SONGS folder. Click on the + by the folder called CONFIG. Click on the + by the folder called GEN. Right click on SONGS.DTB and select EXTRACT. Extract the file somewhere you will remember.
14.) We are now done with GUITAR HERO EXPLORER for now. Close the program. Now open the program GH2NE. Go to FILE-->OPEN FILE and select the SONGS.DTB file you just extracted.
15.) Click on the song name you altered (left column) and then you can change the NAME, ARTIST, BAND SETTINGS, QUICKPLAY PLAYER, and PREVIEW. The only 2 that I usually change are NAME and ARTIST. Once you change these, click SAVE. Now click EXIT.
16.) Go back and re-open GUITAR HERO EXPLORER again. Go back to that SONGS.DTB file you extracted from in step 13. Right click on it and select REPLACE.
17.) Close GUITAR HERO EXPLORER again.
18.) The next program you need to use is CD/DVD GENERATOR. Open it and select CREATE NEW PROJECT, then select DVD-ROM MASTER DISK.
19.) Keep this program running, but re-open the folder where you copied the contents of the Guitar Hero II disk to. Drag the files from this folder into the large white area of the CD/DVD GENERATOR program. Make sure to do it in this exact order: GEN, IOP, VIDEOS, SLUS_214.47, SYSTEM.CNF.
20.) Now click the VOLUME tab. By DISC NAME, enter SLUS and 21447. By PRODUCER NAME, enter PLAYSTATION. By the LICENSE AREA, select AMERICA.
21.) Go to FILE--> EXPORT IML FILE. Name the file GUITARHEROCUSTOM. Click SAVE. And then close the program. It will ask if you want to save again, you don’t have to.
22.) Now open the APACHE 2 program. Go to FILE-->IMPORT IML FILE. Import the GUITARHEROCUSTOM file you just saved. Go to FILE-->BUILD ISO. Save the file as GUITARHEROCUSTOM. Wait for the ISO to be built. Watch the status bar at the bottom of the window. Do not close before the ISO is completely built.
23.) Once the file is built, close the program. Now you have to open the program DVD DECRYPTER.
24.) Go to MODE-->ISO and select WRITE.
25.) Where it says SOURCE: PLEASE SELECT A FILE. Click on the folder icon and select the GUITARHEROCUSTOM.ISO file you just built. Click on the icon with the harddrive and the DVD disk to burn. Just wait for your disk to be burned. (Note: if you get an error message that says UNABLE TO LOCK VOLUME FOR EXCLUSIVE ACCESS. ACCESS IS DENIED, just select IGNORE.
26.) After the disk is burned, use either your modded PS2, Swap Magic, or whatever way you play modded disks to play the game.
This is how to do one song. If you want to do more than just this one, follow the same process. All you need is:
1.)the MID or CHART file
2.)MP3 or WMA of the song you want.
I am not too good at making my own MID or CHART files, so I can’t teach you that yet. I download most of my MID or CHART files from here though. http://www.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16533 You may need an account to view custom song index. Just sign up. Its free
