Hi Guys, today i’m going to talk to you about taking care of a python. Pythons are great pets as they do not need to be fed often, they are low maitenance, and they are relativly cheap pets. In my guide I will be talking about an Australian Costal Carpet Python, but really its the same for any snake you may have.

The Enclosure

What you will need to accomadate your snake is:
1.A hollow rock/log (you can pick one of these up from a pet store for around $20AUD)
2. UV lights/ heat mat
3. Glass reptile enclosure
4. Flooring such as reptile sand(NOT BEACH SAND)reptile turf, or synthetic grass.
5. Long sticks and logs.
6. Water dish

Hollow rock/log

Ok this is bacically the most important item of the enclosure. Snakes need somewhere to hide, get some dark(as pythons are nocturnal), and some where to get heat/cool.

Water Dish

This is another very important item. Snake acturlly drink alot of water so you need to check the water dish is full all the time. This is also important because when your UV light/Heat mat produces heat it evaporate some of the water causing humidity. Pythons love humidity and this will also help with the health of you snake.

Logs and Sticks

It is important that you have many logs and stick that your snake can clime up and crawl around. Pythons love getting up high, and late at night you will see them climeing to the top of the enclosure.

Rocks

It is not too important to have a rock like this but it is a good idea. One reason is because the snake can use it to lye on and also gain heat(If you have the rock over your heat mat, or its in the sun). Also, snakes can use it to shed their skin on.

Feeding spot

One of the by far most important things about caring for a snake is a feeding spot. You cannot feed the snake in your enclosure as then when you want to get it out it will think it is feeding time, and will strike at you. Make sure your feeding place is not to cold, and is walled in. For example, I use my shower, but I put newspaper down so its not so cold on the snakes body.

Food

Again, the most important thing is food. You will not need to feed your snake to often, but I advice that you feed your snake ever 1-2weeks. Depending on what size your snake is is what you can feed it. Right now my Python is about 2feet lond and I feed it mice about, up to 7cm long. But you can feed them crickets, rats(if it is big enough), baby birds, other bugs, etc.

UV light/Heat mat
****No picture****
Sorryi couldn’t get a picture but I have a heat mat and it is under my enclosure and i didn’t want to pull up all the stuff, but anyway. Ok, snake are called cold-blooded creatures and that means they cannot control their body temperature like we can. They need heat to feel warmth. So it is so important that you have UV lights, or a heat mat. You can get these at most pet shops.

My snake - The Coastal Carpet Python

The Coastal Carpet Python is a idea pet for a beginner to snakes/reptiles. Babies only cost around $250AUD and if you are luck enough to get a female(very rare) you can buy a male and sell the babies $200AUD a pop(they have up to 25 eggs per litter).
Thats good money if you ask me.

Licence
Ok it is very important to get a reptile handlers licence. If you do not do this usually you cannot buy a reptile, and can get a very large fine for not having one.

Conclusion
Well all up I think its great having a snake as a pet. They are great if you go on holidays as all you need to do is get a friend to top up the water dish. And if you lose them in your room they can survive up to 6months without food, I find that pretty cool.

Well again thanks for reading, and if you have any questions just ask me!

I’ll give it a 3* because it was good effort even tho not all of the info is correct. For instance you don’t need a UV lamp as snakes (unlike lizzards and other reptiles) don’t use UV light to digest food. All you NEED is a heat source, i.e. heat pad and maybe a heat lamp. good job anyways!

Skullzarmy - I never said they needed UV lamps to digest food. I said that they need a heat source, such as, UV lamps or heat pads. So you are wrong. Wht rate down if you don’t no what you are talking about.....
