Hey there, I’m going to teach you the fundamentals of boxing. Not saying this is gonna help in a street fight, but hey if you ever wanna join boxing you’ll be one step ahead of the game.
First things first, I’m gonna teach you about stance and footwork. Your stance is key in boxing. If you don’t get the stance right, your gonna be losing a lot of potential. Alright, so most people have their right arm, which is stronger than their left. If so your what’s called an orthodox fighter. If not, no worries. You get a fancy name too. Your southpaw. Now, this guide is going to be written to teach orthodox, but with some simple adjustments, you can make it southpaw. Just use the opposite hand to throw the punch I’m talking about. (ex: "Throw your left hang out in front of you." For you southpaws, use your right.)
STANCE
So, your basic stance. You stand with your left foot a little bit in front of your right. Tuck your chin. Put your hands up beside your jaw-bone, or a little higher. Take your left hand and put it up an inch or a few higher than your right. Tuck your elbows in to protect your mid-section. Remember, for southpaws this will be different. Don’t EVER forget to put your hands up, unless you wanna end up getting knocked out. PROTECT YOUR CHEEKBONES.
FOOTWORK
Okay, so get into stance. Now, you always want to stay on your toes, bouncing around. Remember: A moving target, will ALWAYS be harder to hit. You lead with your foot thats ahead of you, orthodox will be your left foot, and south-paw will be right. You basically shuffle around, but NEVER cross your feet. This will make it easy for your target to knock you off your balance. Footwork may seem awkward moving around leading with your forward foot at first, but practice it and you’ll catch on quickly.
BASIC PUNCHES
Jab: The jab is the most basic, commonly used punch in boxing. It’s used to set-up for your power punches, can be used to keep distance, or even to cause damage. To perform a jab, take your left hand and snap it out in front of you. Extend your arm all the way so that it is protecting your chin. Just try it and you’ll know what I mean. This way, well your hand is out your arm stops your opponent from getting in that vital shot. Once you snap your arm out, snap it back in JUST as fast. Alot of boxers I know snap it out fast, and kinda forget to bring it back in. Doesn’t work to well. Once you bring it back, put it right back into your guard position.
Cross: The cross is the opposite of the jab. You use your stronger arm to throw the punch. Follow the same rules as the jab. With your feet, you want to pivot on your right foot as the punch comes out, this will add more force to the punch. Don’t forget to bring your hand back to cover your face.
Upper-Cut: This punch can do some serious damage. You can use either of your arms to perform an uppercut, depending on the situation your in. To perform an uppercut, bend down slightly and punch up-wards into your opponents body, or chin. While doing this use your knees to add more force to the punch. The uppercut can be deadly if used right.
Hook: Here we go, the hook. Alooot of people over-use the hook. They decide they want to go all-out and just start throwing hooks left and right until the opponent drops down unconscious...most of the time this won’t work. Use hooks in moderation and keep mixing up your punches. You don’t want your opponent to be able to predict you. To perform a hook, bring your arm to the side, slightly bent, and rotate your hips so your arm that your going to punch with is away from your opponent. Swing towards your opponent using your hips & arm, at the same time pivot on the foot your hand is punching with. (ex: Throw a left hook, pivot on your left.) A hook to the jaw is one of the worst things you’ll feel in boxing... if you stay awake to feel it.
DEFENSIVE MANEUVERS
Slip: To slip a punch, you move your body to the side fast enough to get inside the punch. From the inside, you can give your opponent your own punch as he probably thought he was going to hit you.
Bob & Weave: When your opponent throws a punch at you, you basically duck underneath it by bending your legs really quickly (bob), then you extend your legs either towards the inside, or outside of your opponents punch (weave).
Blocking & Covering Up To block, you stop your opponents punch with your arms. To do this bring your arms together, in front of you so they’re lined up. Now instead of hitting your face, your opponent only managed to hit your arms. To Cover-Up, you basically do the same thing as blocking, but you use your gloves instead.
Safety Equipment
Boxing Gloves: This is somewhat a given, but boxing gloves are thick padded gloves that cover up your fists to protect you/your opponent while boxing. They come in bag gloves, and sparring gloves(heavier, used for fighting).
Hand-Wraps: Hand wraps are also used to add a degree of protection to your punches. They can help from breaking small bones in your hand and also help from sore knuckles.
Headgear Helmet-like headgear worn to protect you from blows to the head. Worn for fighting and sparring.
Mouthguard: Used to protect your lips, gums, and teeth from incoming blows. Some mouthguards protect from concussions.
***MY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WITH BRACES: Consult your orthodontist first, BUT don’t buy the 200 dollar mouthguard as your teeth WILL be changing. Get a cheap one from Wal-Mart/Canadian Tire.***
EQUIPMENT
Skipping Rope: Use a skipping rope to get your heart rate up, and skipping is a great cardio-vascular workout. It’s not some girly pass-time.
Punching/Heavy Bag: A heavy bag will help you work on your speed, endurance, and power with bag drills. You can get a cheap one from $60-$100.
Speed Bag: Used to increase your agility, speed bags are fairly cheap as well.
Water Bottle Water keeps you hydrated while working out. You don’t want to lose all your liquids from sweating it out. Don’t drink too much water or you’ll get a cramp.
Well, that about wraps it up. Hope you enjoyed it, depending on the feed-back I’ll write some more about boxing work-outs, etc. Sorry I didn’t get any pictures on how the punches work. Thanks for reading.

Nov 24, 2007 8:41 pm - Lovely. All we need is another 12 year old pretending to know about boxing, and attempting to "educate" the population of RE on the subject.
Nov 24, 2007 8:47 pm - Well, sorry if my egg didn’t please you. As I clearly stated it’s not a guide to go get in a street fight. It’s a guide to the SPORT of boxing. It’s wrong of you to say I’m a 12 year old trying to be smart.
Water Bottle Water keeps you hydrated while working out. You don’t want to lose all your liquids from sweating it out. Don’t drink too much water or you’ll get a cramp
If you drink a lot of water you won’t get cramps. Cramps are from not enough water. Too much and you’ll just piss it out anyway.
Nov 24, 2007 9:01 pm - I don’t tell people that they are twelve to make myself smart, my 32 on the ACT does that job quite well. I call you a twelve year old, because you either:
A.)Are 12 years old
or
B.)Have the mentality of one.
We DON’T need another "OMGOSHHOWTOFIGHT&qu t; egg.
Nov 24, 2007 9:05 pm - @Jacky: Hm, well it seems to me when I’m working out I always get a cramp from drinking too much water. BUt who knows, maybe it’s just me.
@Alle-whateverthehel : AS I SAID: It is NOT by any means a "zongwtfhaw2fyte&quo ; egg. It’s to teach the fundamentals of boxing, if your interested in the SPORT. I don’t see how I have the mentality of a 12 year old trying to teach people about a sport.
Nov 24, 2007 9:27 pm - Thanks alot XTR. I haven’t been in boxing too long, but yea. It’s pretty rough. My first day I was sore for almost a week. (I was in pretty bad shape, though). And thanks for the information on cramps. You really seem to know your stuff. I dunno how my profile rating got so bad either. xP
Nov 24, 2007 10:08 pm - why doesnt alle ever stfu??? he critisizes everything on this site big and small... btw 5*on this and your pro, im a big fan of boxing..
drinking too much may not give you cramps exactly, but it will make you feel shitty and sluggish. A good idea is to take small sips every break (as opposed to gulps). This way you wont overdo it on the water. To prevent cramps, just drink a lot before boxing (start drinking in the morning, and stop 1 hours before boxing)
Nov 25, 2007 1:35 pm - nice egg 5*
hey alle, your nothing but a smart ass who probably got his ass kicked in high school and now you try to act tough and smart on the internet, go fuck yourself
