Okay in this egg I’m going to demonstrate the simplicity in making a permanent magnet using blunt trauma. You can conduct this experiment yourself with common things you probably have around your house.
ITEMS NEEDED: Compass
Long nail
Hammer
This hammer I made was the only one I could find.
Okay now all you need to do is line the nail up lengthwise with the magnetnet N and S on the compass and hit it AT LEAST 50-100 times
Now whichever end you have facing North will become magnetically alligned to attract a southern pole and vice versa.
Take note that in these videos I had already hit it about 75 times each before starting the video.
Here is the first video demonstrating the effects of blunt trauma on a ferromagnetic material, in this case a Iron nail.
In this second video I turned the nail the opposite way and demonsrated that the magnetic allignment can be REVERSED with trauma.
Using the same method you can de-magnetize the nail by alligning it East to West rather than North to South.
This is solely intended to show the properties of magnetic materials.
Most magnets Polarity can be strengthened, weakened, or even reversed with the application of trauma. This can include dropping the magnet on a hard surface, allowing a hard object to hit a stationary magnet, or allowing two magnets to strongly collide.
Dec 03, 2007 6:40 pm - good egg. 5* I got fucked up terribly when i did orienteering in 6th grade in britain. It was hailing and I was 2 miles off course. I stole that compus and destroyed it. not that it has anything to do with this...
