Creating gif avatars out of movies
Software required (i will explain how to get these next): 1. camstudio
2. Ulead GIF Animator (or similar gif editor)
3. Windows Media Player (or a random youtube video)
How to get the software: 1. Camstudio - Camstudio is a free screen capture program. It allows you to take video screenshots, and is very helpful for a number of causes. the most recent version (as of December ’07) is available at http://www.camstudio.org/CamStudio20.exe. Download it and run the setup.
2. Ulead GIF Animator - Ulead Gif Animator is a great program for editing GIFs. It is easiest to download in a torrent (groans from every direction), i reccomend http://www.mininova.org/tor/489405. NOTE: some users have encountered problems if certain codec packs are installed on their computers. To rectify just uninstall the codec pack causing the problem, install Ulead GIF animator then reinstall the codec pack. 3. if you don’t know what youtube or windows media player is, welcome to the internets.
Setting up WMP to record videos: If you plan to record a youtube video, there is no tweaking you need to do. If you want to record a video that is stored on your hard drive, there are a few changes you need to make to windows media player to facilitate this. I don’t think there is any tweaking you need to do if you want to record from quicktime.
1. Open up WMP
2. Click the little arrow thing under "now playing" and click "more options..."
3. Under the performance tab, click advanced down near the bottom
4. Uncheck the two circled options. If later on it doesn’t record properly, just match my settings.
5. Save these settings. WMP is now configured correctly.
Recording the video: 1. Open up camstudio
2. Under Options>Video Options, match these settings as these are optimal for creating gifs.
3. Under Options>Cursor Options, select the "hide cursor" radio button.
4. Now open up your favourite movie in WMP or youtube (which is obviously Hot Fuzz) and get to the bit that you want to record. Rewind to about 5 seconds before that moment so that you capture the action and pause it there.
5. If you are in WMP, Resize The video to make it fairly small by dragging the playlist bar across. this can save a bit of work later on.
6. Go back into camstudio and click on Region>Fixed Region...
7. Press the select button up the top and then drag the area that you want to record. It should be a rough square shape.
8. Press record in camstudio and THEN press play in WMP. When you have finished recording right click the camstudio system tray icon and press stop. a save dialogue will come up. save it as an avi.
Editing with Ulead GIF Animator: 1. Right click on the video and click open with..., then select ulead gif animator. alternatively you could just open it up and under the file menu click add video.
2. Click ok on the dialogue box.
3. Highlight the frames up to where you want the gif to start from then right click and press delete frames.
4. Do the same for the end of the movie.
5. If you are happy with the video, click on edit>resize image and change it to 100x100 or smaller. This is why it is helpful to record in a box shape.
6. Now click on the optimize tab and wait for it to optimize. once it has, press save near the bottom right hand corner of the screen, or, if the optimized size is larger than the original, click file>save as>gif file...
7. You should now have your image ready for upload.
Further Optimization If The file is still too large for RE, don’t worry. There is one last thing you can do. if this fails then you’re fucked ;).
1. Go to http://www.spinwave.com/crunchers.php 2. scroll down to the bottom where there is a gif optimizer.
3. browse for the image and click crunch. soon there will be some various versions of the image, each with a different file size.
So there you have it. Your own animated gif.
NOTES 1. As mentioned before, there is sometimes a problem when certain codecs are combined with Ulead GIF Animator. I have quite a few codecs and this hasn’t happened to me, so i’m not sure about the exact details.
2. If something doesn’t work, copy ALL the settings shown in this guide. This could solve the problem.
3. Some computers run really slow and crash when taking video screenshots. To fix this, right click on your desktop and click properties. Then under the settings tab, click advanced then go to the troubleshoot tab. Drag the hardware acceleration slider to none. This should fix the problem.
4. Ulead GIF Animator has many other features such as tweens and moving text.

when i make gifs out of movies, i ushaly import the movie into windows movie maker, cut out the bits i dont wont. export it as WMV and then using FLASH i export as gif.

Flash works too its just that Ulead GIF Animator seems more suited to it.
Dec 08, 2007 10:30 pm - too much work. I just use Camtasia you can record it then save it as a .gif its like urs but all in one program but w/e i thought it was swell that you’re willing to share this info with the plenty of RE fags.
