This guide will show you how to make a relatively cheap and easy way to make a strong shield. It also covers your whole body and objects tend to glance off it due to its rounded shape. The shield is also lightweight and is very durable. You also get two shields per drum, yay!
Materials
- Oil Drum (can be plastic or metal)
- Reciprocating Saw (or Hacksaw
- Power Drill
- Measuring Tape
- Marker
- Rough Sandpaper
- Straps or Rope
First off, if you can’t see the line where your drum is put together then you need find the circumference and mark it halfway. I could see where they did it on mine.
Take you marker and mark down the side every inch or so, so you know where to cut. Make sure you do this on the other side too.
Now make sure it’s stable ( I put mine against something and also put my foot on it) and cut it.
Once you cut all around take the pieces apart and put one to the side. You can make another shield with the other half whenever you want.
Cut off the lid. There’s usually a little dip there so it will be easy to keep the saw in place.
At the bottom there is a low and high part. You want to cut right between them.
To install the handles you need to drill four slots. Measure and mark four dots approximately five inches apart and ten inches down.
Now put your straps or rope in. Tie it off on the inside and make sure its tight, but not so much it’s hard to put your hand and arm in.
Get your Sandpaper and rub off the extra plastic on the side. It comes off pretty easy. If yours is metal then you can omit this step.

I would say check near lakes lots (they hold up docks) , hardware stores, or trashcans would probably work just as good. In fact they have trashcans that almost look exactly like oil drums.
If you really want one but can’t find anything you can buy one from here for abut 40 bucks.
