How to Read Tablature (Tabs)
For many people new to playing guitar, learning how to read music can be a big hassle if you’re an impatient as I am. Here is the easiest and best was to read music because you can find a lot of tabs online.
Finding a Tab
First go to ultimate-guitar.com Finding a tab is the easiest step in this process. Simply think of any song you want to learn on guitar then type it into the search bar on this site. In this example I will be demonstrating with most guitarists’ first song “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple. This is an extremely simple song to learn due to its low number of notes and chords.
Reading the Tab
Reading the tab is where most people get frustrated and give up. If you look at the tab you will notice that the numbers are located on 6 different lines. These lines are each a different string on the guitar. The bottom line is the 6th string. It is the thickest string also known as the E or low E string. The second from the bottom line is the A string. The 3rd line up is the D string. The 4th line up is the G string (Don’t laugh). The 5th line up is the B string. And finally the top, most thin string is the E or high E string.
Knowing Where to Play
If you look at the tab, you will see numbers. These numbers correspond with the frets on the guitar. The frets are the pieces of wire placed all up the neck. The higher the fret number, the higher the pitch of the note is. So the first thing you will do is put your finger on the 3rd fret of the D and G string (Don’t laugh). Then with these steps you continue the song. With this kept in mind, you should be able to learn any song you want after you practice a lot. Thanks for reading.
