In my city of Clinton Iowa there is a creek that bubbles out of the ground on some farmland out of town. For the most part structures were built around the creek but when the city started growing it was decided that it would be easier to put the whole thing underground rather than build bridges. I think that it was probably covered over sometime in the early thirties to give people something to do after the stock market crashed.
At the entrance to the tunnel you walk into a large concrete box which is about 10’x10’. This is the only area with graffiti in it because all of the punk kids in my town are scared $**tless of the tunnel. It then dips down about 2 feet into a 6’x6’ boxlike tunnel. After about 150 feet of concrete tunnel the walls become arched and are made from limestone. The floor is made out of deteriorated cobblestone which has come loose opening up sinkholes in some places. Then you get to the labyrinth.
The labyrinth is the name my friends have given to a large room where several large drainage pipes empty out into the creek. One of these pipes is three feet in diameter and leads up a steep hill. If you were high, stupid, or thinking of committing suicide you could climb to the top of the hill inside this pipe and wait for a rainstorm. I think you can imagine the rest. The labyrinth is also the hardest part to cross without getting wet so I suggest wader boots or exploring in the wintertime when much of the water is frozen upstream. This is also where most of the dead animals have their final resting place because of the slower current. But the best things about this area are the animals that are still alive. In the water there are hundreds of small, pure white fish with huge, milky eyes. Many years ago some of the minnows that inevitably get carried into the tunnels must have reproduced in there. There are also muskrats, raccoons, and some kind of rat. And when I say rat I mean huge mutated large-eyed sewer rats from hell. Anyway
After the labyrinth there is a sandy, silty, muddy, sink hole ridden underground swampland type thing that is a b***h to get across. Then you get into the really old part of the system. Its completely circular and a bit higher than the rest of the tunnel so theres only about an inch of water running through. It would be a very good place to stay if you were on the run. If you had a cot that is. That area unlike most of the tunnel stays at a comfortable fifty six degrees year round. Its at least seven feet high and makes up most of the tunnel system. It doesnt even smell like the rest of the place. This is the best place you want to be if your flashlight goes out because theres nothing unexpected and if you keep heading straight youll eventually get out.
Tips: Always travel with a partner. Take extra batteries. NEVER GO if there is even a chance of rain! Take a weapon like a hatchet (huge mutated large-eyed sewer rats from hell). Take a fishing pole and some bait (who says blind fish cant smell).
