I’am well aware that there are 2 eggs already in the directory on this subject, so dont go bitching about how overdone/old this is. What you may not be aware of is how grossly inaccurate and sheerly opinionated these eggs are. I will list the indredients of MOST energy drinks below, and give a brief summary of what purpose each serves.

Caffeine: Arguably the most popular drug in the world, a psychoactive stimulant found in many plants around the world. The plants use the caffeine as a pesticide, killing many of the insects that feed off of them. Caffeine derivitives such as Mateine(cacao based), Guranine(gurana baed), and Theine (tea based) are all synonymous for caffeine. Many people will tell you energy drinks are dangerous because of it’s high caffeine content, and it’ use of gurana seed extract (a richer and faster catalyzed source of caffeine). This, for the most part, is bullshit, coffee has a much higher caffeine level, often double that of most energy drinks. Drip-brewed coffee, and most freeze dried blends contain a minimum of 100mg of caffeine per 12fl oz’s (about 360mls for all you metric folks :D) whereas the average energy drink only contains roughly 60-80mg’s per fluid oz. Fortunatly, most energy drink criticisers are coffee drinkers :D

OD’ing: A previous egg said something to the effect that caffeine overdose occurs at about 63oz’s of a standard energy drink....This is also bullshit, although caffeine overdose CAN occur in as little as 1 or 2 grams, this is very rare, and regularly occurs in people with previous conditions. Caffeine intoxication (that sensation you experience after shotgunning a 4pk of red bull :D) occurs after ingesting 400-500mg of caffeine. The amount of caffeine needed for people without a heart condition, or sensitivity to caffeine is estimated to be about 120 - 150mg PER KILOGRAM OF BODY MASS!! Thats 60 - 75 mg’s per pound. Roughly the equivalent of 80 - 100 cups of coffee for the average male. Not to mention that you have to consume that much caffeine in a specific time frame.

Well, what about the other enrgy drink ingredients?

Guarana: Contains 3x more caffeine than coffee beans, guarana also aids memory retension, metabolism and alertness. It is a popular herbal supplement cultivated originally, and most popularly in Brazil

Taurine: An amino sulfonic acid Used mostly for skeletal muscle regeneration/endurance in humans, whereas it is an essential amino acid for cats, without it cat’s suffer from degenrative retinal syndrome, and eventually go blind. There are myths that taurine is found in bull semen, thus the reason why red bull is rumoured to contain bull semen. This is not bull semen, but once again, bullSHIT, the only reason it’s known as taurine is because it was first isolated from ox bile.

Vitamin B6: Aids in the conversion and metabolism of many amino acids, Is necessary for the enzymatic reaction that releases glucose (sugar) into the body.

Panax Ginseng: Another Herbal supplement used mainly for memory retension, alert/focused nature, and metabolism

L-Carnitine: Found in carrots, similar to L-lysine, good for skin health, metabolism, and eyesight

This isn’t a guide. It’s not showing us anything, it’s just information that may not even be right.
