How to: PSP Analog Stick
Overview
If you own a PSP you should know that the analog nub is terrible. In case you did not know it is the small dark pad beneath the D-pad. After playing games for a while it began to wear out on me and I was pissed off about it more than usual. I had an old broken generic PS2 controller lying around and I decided to use it to make my own analog pad. This guide will show you how.
Please note that I am using an aftermarket controller pad. Not the original Sony one, if you are going to use that one read step one carefully.
De5criptions will be on top of photos.
This is a comparison of the analog pad and the PSP’s analog nub.
Materials
1. Scissors
2. Cutting tool(s)
3. Sandpaper (or grinding instrument)
4. Paperclip (or wire)
5. Wire cutters
6. Lighter
7. Candle
8. Spare analog pad (get one from an old controller, it will be unusable afterwards)
9. PSP (the old one otherwise known as the “phat”)
10. Super glue
(Optional) Butane Lighter
Materials (some items not shown)
Instructions
1. Take apart you controller and get the analog stick. You can either pry it out or take it apart. Pry off your PSP analog pad and compare it to the analog pad you have. If the little hole on PSP pad matches the controller pad hole then you are in luck and can stop at step 3 and just stick it in the PSP. If not continue with this guide.
2. Get your cutting tools and cut off the plastic cover. Cut it as much or as little as you like you can always adjust it later.
3. Get your sandpaper and clean up the edges of the plastic cover.
4. Get some strong wire that will fit into the little hole on the PSP. Pull it out and check how much goes in and cut 1 inch above that mark.
It has to be strong wire that will not bend easily and fits snugly into the hole. This paper clip works fine.
5. After you cut it off stick it into the hole to see how well it fits. Gauge how much will stick out after you force it in, you want about ½ of an inch. (You’ll see what I mean later.)
6. Get the sharper end of the wire and heat it with a candle or something. Butane lighters work well.
Make sure it gets red hot!
7. When it’s red hot shove it in as far as it will go into the hole of the analog stick.
8. When it has cooled a bit, put super glue on it to make sure it stays there.
9. After the glue dries try putting it into the PSP analog hole. Measure out how much goes in and cut off the excess. (You want just enough wire to go into the hole without leaving any extra wire sticking out.)
10. Take it out and sand down the end of the wire, you don’t want it to poke anything inside the PSP. Don’t sand too much, just enough to make it not sharp.
11. That’s it you are finished. Here is a video of it working. It feels much better than the old one.
PAQ’s (Possible Asked Questions)
