I have recently stolen a Casino Game made by the Gaming legends Hoyle from my local ASDA.
I have been playing as much as I can and my laptop is now covered in shortcuts to this game.
One of my favourite casino games is now and always has been Blackjack, ever since I was taught how to play he game of “21” as a kid in my friend’s caravan. Because It was the game of 21 and not of Blackjack, we didn’t have a dealer. But as I hit the age of about 16, I found out the “proper” name of 21 was Blackjack, and that you needed a dealer to play. As I got further into tactics of Blackjack, I found the concept of Card Counting. I’ve been doing a lot of research on this concept, and this is what I’ve found.
The History Of Card Counting
Card Counting has been around 1962 when a gentleman called Edward. O Thorpe beat the dealer by counting cards and went on to write a book about it. He sold 500,000 copies of the book. At the time, he was a professor at MIT. He discovered that, because the used cards are discarded after play, there is a way of determine whether or not the remaining cards can be valuable on invaluable to your play.
The Concept Of Card Counting Blackjack is the only casino game that can be beaten legally. The way of beating it is through the strategy of card counting. Card Counting these days is called many things. Its called a science, a skill and maybe even an art. Some people might call it cheating, but I don’t see it as cheating. The way most people see it is having information not available to other people on the table. The way I see it is collecting information valuable to your game play that everyone else on the table has access to. Your not using outside information, any tools or markers, its completely legal because anyone on the table has the information you have as a card counter. Your not altering the game in any way, but a lot of people still see it as cheating.
Gaming many years ago made the decision that if your using your brain to count cards, that is illegal, however, since that time card counting has taken on a whole new face, and people have teams and groups of card counters, where one person counts the cards, and the other person bets large amounts of money depending on the true count.
Welcome to the basics of Card Counting.
Blackjack is different to all other casino games, because as the cards are dealt, the odds are changing all the time. Now, there are two important things you need to know about Blackjack. Low cards are bad, and High cards are good. With more high cards, the player is more likely to get blackjack, while the dealer is more likely to bust. The way of keeping track is by using what the MIT call, “The point Count System”.
No matter how many decks, there is always an equal number of high and low cards, therefore the low cards are each worth +1, while high cards are worth -1. The more high cards that come out, the lower the count, and its time to leave the table. The more low cards that come out, the higher the count is, and its time to bet big.
This is a basic tally system used to evaluate the odds of getting high or low cards. This score that you tally up at the end of each game, but continue to use throughout the game is called “The True Count“ There are many methods used in Blackjack Card Counting, but after a bit of trial and error in collage, I find this system is the best to use.
A higher count (any count that is over 0) means more low cards have been dealt, compared to the number of high cards that have been dealt, therefore, the deck is loaded with high cards, and that is more favourable to you as a player. A deck rich in high cards in more favourable to you because it means that you will have more of a chance of getting blackjack and the dealer will have more of a chance of becoming bust.
A lower count (any count that is under 0) means that more low cards have been dealt, so the deck is more favourable to the dealer. The dealer will bust less often if the count is lower.
A neutral count is neither favourable nor unfavourable. It is entirely up to you what to do next. The best thing to do in this situation would be to fall back on the old unwritten rules of Blackjack, and if you are a regular player, you’ll know what I mean.
Using This Method While Betting
Obveusly, the whole reason for devising the method of Card Counting is to make money from using it, so I’ll need to explain how to use the method when betting. Now use the following table as a guideline for betting based on true count.
If the true count is.. Bet this amount
Any negative number (minus sign) 1 unit
0 1 unit
+1 2 units
+2 to +3 3 units
+4 4 units
+5 6 units
+6 6 units
+7 8 units
+8 10 units
+9 and above 12 units (or max bet)
Ace Counting
Another additional tactic that you could teach yourself is the skill of ”Ace Counting”.[i] Tracking the ace count of the deck and indicates whether the deck is ace-rich, ace-poor, or neutral. it is also useful to keep track of the number of aces left in the deck. A high card-rich deck that is also ace-poor yields few blackjacks.
Because a deck holds four aces, normal distribution is two aces per half deck. If one ace or zero aces are dealt in a half deck (on average), the remaining half deck is ace-rich. If two or more aces are dealt in a half-deck (on average), the deck is ace-poor. When the true count is positive and the deck is ace-rich, you may want to add an extra unit to your bet. Conversely, if the deck is ace-poor, you may want to subtract a unit from the bet.
Hopefully, you can learn these skills and get a bit of an income for it. There are things you have to remember though. The hardest thing about Card Counting is that sooner of later, you’re going to have to put you’re money on the line.
Jan 19, 2008 8:36 am - Card counting problems: 1) Large shoes: It takes a lot of cards played to get a true count from a 10 deck shoe. 2) 20% shuffle: Counts work great near the end of the shoe. Just before the end, the casino will shuffle the shoe. 3) Getting a positive count: Nothing like counting down a 10 deck shoe and having a negative count. 4) Boredom: Every hand must be played in a certain way. With rules telling you to stand or hit, the game is no longer fun.
I have a similar casino game. It does the counting for you. It does work if you got time.
Jan 19, 2008 9:53 am - This does take serious amounts of practice. Its best to arrive at the table early in the shoe. Also, try using your peripheral vision when counting whenever possible; you don’t want to make it look obvious and get yourself kicked out. Thats probably the hardest part of card counting -looking casual while you’re doing it. It’s probably also best to have a partner that you can somehow signal to come to the table to start laying down big bets, because if your bets suddenly go from $5 to $50, the dealer is gonna know something is up. I’ve been studying this for awhile with my dad and we have gained more profit than the usual BJ (haha) player, its not exactly like it would look like on TV where we "break Vegas."
Jan 19, 2008 10:14 am - Some collage students actualy broke vegas once...
They walked away with a cool $10 mil...
In one weekend...
There called the Blackjack Institute...
Now there banned from most casinos...
