OK,this egg is about how to make the trout rig I use.
I know similar rigs have been in use since long before I was even born but they all require lots of swivels and far more knots than I ever feel like tying.
also I Had to make a crappy drawing because I can’t possible take photos of something so small and transparent as fishing line.
1:start out by cutting a piece of fishing line to about 6 feet in length.
2:gather a loop about 9" from one end,the loop should be long enough so that when stretched out straight it’s about 8 inches long.
3:now tie a knot with the loop as in the top left image in the picture, without pulling it tight stick the end of the loop through again like in the second picture;do this five times and then pull it tight,You should now have a loop that roughly resembles the horizontal loop in the picture.
4:make two more of these loops, each one about 9" from the other.now you’re ready to put the hooks on.
5:to add the hooks you just stick the end of the loop through the BOTTOM of the hook hole and then push the hook through the loop like in the picture,do that with all three loops and you’re done!
6:using this rig is easy, just add a 1/2 ounce or 1 once sinker to one end and a swivel to the other and you’re ready to go.
BAIT This can be used with any bait used for trout fishing:
salmon eggs
cheese
marshmallows
corn
meal worms
earth worms
It also works super well with artificial baits like GULP(I’ve had great luck with their hatchery formula power bait)
NOTE check you’re local laws before fishing or using this rig, here in jersey there is a three hook limit per line(I wouldn’t use more anyway)as well as a two line per person limit.but your local laws may be different. Most places also require a trout stamp in addition to your fishing license. And don’t forget to wait for trout season before You go out.
Feb 27, 2008 7:20 am - this is a very good explanation of what we call a dropper loop in california we use it mainly for rockfishin and sculpin. only difference is we use a poor mans bimini instead of the truckers hitch for the hooks. verry well done. 5*
