The iPod Guy
Introduction
We’ve all seen those iPod ads with the black dudes jumping around with an iPod. This tutorial will show you how to make that exact same effect using Photoshop CS3.
Stuff needed
- Photoshop CS3 (extended or regular), this will probably work on previous versions.
- A mouse is helpful, touchpads are crap for drawing.
- The font "Myriad Pro"
Method
- If you’re a myspace whore, take a photo of yourself. If you are not a myspace whore, get a photo off of google. I chose this:
- Open it up in photoshop and select the pen tool.
- Zoom in and draw roughly around the outside, sticking to the edge of the person. Click the mouse on each new change of direction or edge. Ignore the curves, we will fix them up later.
- Continue the whole way around. Your end result should look a little like this:
- Now to add in the curves. Select the Add anchor point tool.
- Click in the middle of the lines that need curves. DO NOT CLICK AND DRAG. Click, release, then click again and then drag.
- Continue the whole way around. Don’t be overly detailed. Remember, iPods are all about simplicity. If it doesn’t adhere exactly to the curve, use those clicky things to drag it into place. It should now look like this:
- Go back to the pen tool, create a new layer then right click on the path and click fill path. Fill it with black.
- You are now done with that path. Right click on it and press "delete path".
- Time for the Background. Make a new layer behind the black guy but in front of the original picture. Fill that layer with the color of your choice. I chose bright green (#00ff00). It should now look like this:
- Incase you haven’t already, leave room for text.
- Now let’s make the headphones. Make a new layer, and make two small white ellipses over the ears with the ellipse tool.
- Go into the brush tool and set the master diameter to "2 px" and the hardness to 100%.
- Make a new layer. Go into the Pen tool again and draw a line like this:
- Add some curves.
- Set the foreground colour to white. Right click on the path then press stroke path. Select "brush" in the popup menu, uncheck simulate pressure then press ok. Delete the path.
- Make a little rectangle at the top of the line. Now go into the brush tool and set the master diameter to "1 px".
- Make two more lines with the pen tool. Do i really need to explain this deeply?
- Now for the iPod itself. Create a new layer and make a rounded rectangle. The radius should be "1 px". Click Edit > Free Transform and move it into place with your wire. Then put the opacity to 50%.
- Use the lasso tool to select some of the hand, then press delete.
- Add text. Make the font "Myriad Pro" and the style "semibold".
- You’re done! Save it as a .png to avoid losing clarity.
Other Ideas
- Have a photo with a whole group of people, make them all black and change whatever they’re holding to white.
- Use different objects.

Even if i did tell you what to rate, doesn’t mean you should take it seriously. I just put it in there as a reminder that i’m human. |

Well in school you weren’t screenshotting, cropping, opening in photoshop, saving, optimising, and organising into a tutorial were you? I tried this BEFORE making the egg and it took ~ 5 mins.

I like GIMP, but photoshop is more widespread and a lot more RE members have it. Most of the people who use GIMP are on linux anyway, and the method is pretty similar. You saying that is like me punching you for eating an apple when a pear could have done the same thing.

Who the fuck are you? Anyway it DID take about 5 minutes. It took about ~2 1/2 hours to WRITE THE EGG. Dipshit. |

 | Apr 25, 2008 6:37 am - The 2.5 hours thing gets me, maybe including the upload time for the pictures, and creation of the egg.
Alas, it does show effort in an egg, and that’s a good thing..
