today we’ll be learning how to make a triple water filtered smoking utensil. it’s not too hard if you have a basic understanding of how these things work. first, materials
you will need:
two identical plastic bottles. the tropicana bottles do perfectly
duct tape or electrical tape
hot glue
something to make holes with
a socket wrench head
two pen tubes. you need to be able to sit the socket wrench head on one of the ends of one of the pen tubes. it needs to be airtight. you might need to look around for a while to find one that works
a marker tube or another tube larger than the pen. you need to be able to fit this on the inside of one of the bottle caps and close it comfortably. again, you may need to look around for a while to find one that works. if this doesn’t make sense right now, don’t worry. it will.
some kind of tubing (if you don’t have this, you may substitute another pen tube)
and last but not least, a pill bottle.
here’s what you do first. make a hole the size of the pen tube through the cap of the pill bottle. extend the pen tube almost down to the bottom of the bottle. near the top of the tube, make a hole and insert your tubing. all of this NEEDS TO BE AIRTIGHT. use glue if it’s not! if you are using a pen tube instead of tubing, it will need to be inserted at a slant. make sure you can rest your socket wrench head on the opening comfortably and check for airtightness. your product should look like this:
next, take one of your bottles and make a hole in the side so that you can rest both the bottle and the pill bottle on a flat surface comfortably. make sure this is airtight! it should look like this:
the next step is to take both of your bottle caps and make a hole the size of the pen tube through both of them. stick the pen tube so that it is protruding out of one of the caps. tape the caps together. this should be obvious, but the caps need to be back to back. if you did it correctly, it will look like this:
this is where it gets a tad bit tricky. you’re now going to make the percolator, the third water filtration system for your piece. take your larger tube and poke holes all around it about 1/4 of the way up. hot glue this to the inside of the cap. make sure that you can screw the cap on to the bottle comfortably. this is extremely important! if it doesn’t screw on properly, you will leak water. what will happen is smoke will rise into and out of the tube. it will be forced through the holes in the second tube and filtered in water. in this picture, i provided the hidden (dashed) lines to clear up any confusion.
you’re getting close to being done! remove the END of the second bottle. use tape to make the edge less jagged so you don’t hurt yourself. screw the bottle caps onto the bottles. make sure that everything is airtight and everything is secure. fill the water reservoirs with water. your product is now complete. if everything was done properly, you should have something that somewhat resembles this:
the socket wrench head will act as a sort of slide. it will be harder to pull air through the small hole in the socket, so when you pull it off, air will rush in faster to clear the chambers. this thing WILL get hot! very hot! you might want to create some sort of handle to keep from burning your fingers.
don’t be afraid to add modifications to this. it could always use another percolator, a diffuser, and maybe an ice holder. and of course, this is for tobacco use only ;) wink wink. have fun.
CAUTION: be EXTREMELY CAREFUL and MAKE SURE than you are not burning any plastic when using this! smoking is bad for your health but inhaling plastic vapors can be FATAL.
Apr 15, 2008 2:45 pm - well of course. if you have a volcano then you shouldn’t be wasting your time making a piece. i’ve used a volcano before. pleasurable experience ;).
Apr 15, 2008 2:50 pm - by the way, THC is EXTREMELY insoluble in water. you might filter out a total of 2-3% of the THC through all 3 filters. that small percentage doesn’t make a difference, and the health benefits are worth it.
