Tips on Film Making -Tantrum
In this day and age, almost anyone can make films and broadcast them over the internet, exposing it to (potentialy) millions of veiws. Ever wonder what seperates good short films from complete fucking disasters? Well, being a filmmaker myself, I took the task of watching several hundred terrible peices of shits on youtube, then watching several hundred well done films. I compiled a list of traits good films have, and a list of traits bad films have. If you want to make movies, then I suggest you read this. It’s valuable info :)
BAD SHORT FILMS:
- Bad Audio
Do your best to elimanate ALL white noise. Y’know, that fuzzy noise in the background? To do this, use a boom mic. This will also help the actors voice not sound like a whisper. Also, when playing a song in a scene where there is dialouge, don’t let the music overpower the dialouge. Oh god no.
- Bad Lighting
Make sure your film is well lit at ALL TIMES. If you’re doing a daytime outside scene, film on an overcast day. If your doing an indoor night scene, make sure to have a good light source that evenly fills the room (unless you want a creepy look...) To get indoor lighting, go to this website. Also, for the love of christ, make sure the lighting isn’t bright-yellow or green or something. Ughh...
- Bad Picture
USE A TRIPOD!!! Fuck handheld, use it sparignly, only in action scenes. Build a camera jib. (HERE) Build a tracked dolly. (HERE) I reccomend using the dolly as much as you can, in slow, steady shots. It looks really nice. If you want steady handheld, make a steadycam (HERE). Steadycams rock.
- Bad Setting
If you’re making a short about secret agent spy’s, or an alien invasion, DON’T USE YOUR FUCKING BACKYARD AS THE MAIN SETTING. Shit I’ve seen so many shorts that were ruined because of lazy settings. Instead, go downtown. Go to an abandoned structure. Go to the woods, the beach, a rooftop, a sewer, an old factory, etc...
- Bad Acting
Ok. I’m gonna guess and say that no one on RE is 12-14, so this isn’t much of a problem for you. But I’ve seen way too many shorts that have epic stories, but twelve-year-old protaganists. Get someone older. Also, (tip for actors) DON’T Take acting so seriously. Find every aspect of the character you play, and mix it with yourself. add humor in your voice, but don’t smile too much. Find a good medium. :)
- BAD STORY
There seems to be a misconception. You see, a feature length film is a story with a begining, middle, and end. It has a nice plot, and can comfortably fit a lengthy story in it without rushing. A short film, on the other hand, isn’t supposed to be a feature film. A short is a snapshot, a glimpse into someones life. Too often do people try to fit feature length stories into short films. It ends up a disaster. When writing a short film, remember that you’re writing about an event, not a series of events.
OK well that wraps up the BAD short film trends. I might write the GOOD trends one, but that really depends on if you guys liked this. Please tell me if you want more. |

 | Jul 06, 2008 3:05 pm - rather good, links to those are a plus, but do you really expect some 15-18 year olds to either, A, screw around with a camera and just do mini random movies, or actually do the things pros use.
so if you make a positive one, itd be better if there was a medium there ^.^
anyway, i liked the egg.
3*
oh, if you dont have a sound boom theres a few programs that can remove background noise, but i doubt theyre cheap, and the ones that are probably suck. |
